Why do I have the 'Scottish cringe?'?

I am born and bred in Scotland but I think of us a laughing stock, the kind of nation you like to visit but don't take seriously, kind of like Ireland. We don't talk proper English which makes us look to outsiders that we're stupid or something. Our accents don't come across well on TV.

I always say I'm British, what is wrong with me, am I just a self-loathing Scot?

On the other hand, a scots accent (outside of broad Glaswegian) isn't class defined by English people so it can carry you through that class thing that still goes on. The English have this thing about foreigners you know, anyone with a non-english accent is kind of discounted anyhow, it isn't just the Scots and Irish, they're not too sure about the Welsh either or northerners! I wouldn't let the inbred predudices of the Southern English influence your own pride in your nationality.

You are right, you come from a beautiful country which has its own national identity and a great deal to be proud of in its past. The English have a lot to be ashamed about in how they have treated Scotland historically. Some English people will try to make you feel their shame for that. Read about Robert the Bruce and William Wallace, learn more about Scotland and its heroes, read Scots writers, look at Scots artists and engineers work. If you know your origins then you will add a dimension to be proud of to your own valuing of yourself.

My wife and I went to the Boarders this year, First time for me in Scotland, even though, I have been around the Globe and travelled extensively, However, I enjoyed my self so much in Scotland, We are going to Fort William for a couple of weeks in May,We were treated very well,& I am looking foreward to our next trip. I don't see why you should be, A SELF-LOATHING SCOT.

i was born north of the border as well and i completely agree with you. **ss-up brewery organise couldn't scots. Ridiculous that we're even thought of as anything more than a region of the UK

I think it's because you're an idiot.
If our accents don't come accross well on TV then why is there such a proportionally large number of Scottish voices used in advertising?
Because it's a great accent. Compare it to any of the English regional accents and I'm sure you'll find it favourable.
And when are we the laughing stock? To who?

Don't be so hard on yourself. For starters, the Scottish accent is the best. After the hard time I have had with Londoners this Christmas, give me the Scots anytime!!!

?
that to do with the developed American perception of other natives because of the way Americans disrespectfully depict and portray other nationalitys on there tv programs. yanks think that the only country in the world is america. all a bit insane dont you think.
