Why do england and scotland hate each other so much?

I'm Scottish, and I don't hate English people at all (I'll be marrying one soon) but if an English person were to be so nasty to the Scottish, 99% of the time I would stand up for my country, just as much as they would stand up for their's. Why all the hatred and arguing? Where did it all come from? Do you hate people because they're Scottish/English or is it just the nation as a whole?

its funny, I had a discussion about this with some one today.

I dont have anything against the English - but the English tend to carry great grudges against the scottish. The other day I met a girl from London - she was talking to me very well but as soon as I mentioned I was scottish she was like , "oh ok.." and acted differently with me since then. Its quite pathetic that some still have these grudges.

Just reading some of the comments here you have got, some one said that scottish people are angry people?! I completely disagree.. and does that person know every single scottish person? its awful.

Also, someone said something about the accent? Everywhere in scotland is different for an accent. Im from Aberdeen - I have a completely different accent to someone from say, Glasgow..To say "I dont mind the Scottish but i dislike the accent" - its shows complete ignorance.

I was on a forum about Billy Connolly the other day (amazing comedian) and the amount of arguments between the scottish and the English was crazy. English people were saying "scotland is not independant! they live off the english tax payers" etc etc, it was awful...

Im living abroad right now and the first thing someone says to me when they find out im Scottish is, "really? I can understnad you though! I cant usually understand the scottish accent".. and that can get annoying!
and many times ive been asked "your english, your from England?" and I say - "im from the UK yes..but im from Scotland not England!" its as if Scotland isnt part of the uk or something!

I dunno, I dont think the "feud" between the Scottish and English will ever stop.

Take solace in this:No nation is hated as much as mine.

I am Scottish (can you tell?) Personally, I do not hate English people apart from in a Footballing sense in which from the top all the way down, they are arrogant , full of pish and can't see the fog for the mist in terms of how poor and over-rated English football is as a whole.
Obviously, in History there are many reasons for these countries to have a dislike for each other but I am certainly no expert on it so can't really comment .

The Scots certainly seem to have a chip on their shoulder when they discuss England and the English. The English on the other hand just are just amused by the Scots and that probably makes some of us jocks even angrier.

Having read all the other answers, it would appear to me that both sides arguments are coloured by films and tv (legends too of course) rather than by fact,
The truth of the matter is both countries are interdependent, friendly rivalry is fine, but it is noticeable how we cling together, in the armed forces and as expatriates. This so called hate has only become noticeable in recent years, probably due to the nationalists, and journalism

I didnt know they did, never came accross it, no problem as far as im concearned, take an individual as u find them, where ever they come from

English people do not hate scottish people but scottish people do have this inferiority complex and dependency on England which makes the scottish people angry at themselves. They place this anger in a outward way towards england, for example would prefer anyone but England to win anything. England does not think like this to Scotland.

I'm English and have had Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Jewish, Dutch, German, French, Italian, American, Spanish etc friends and ''Friends.''

I don't recall ever having 'hated' any Scotsmen nor been the hate of one either!! So I don't know about any of it. I do, on the other hand, know of a certain 'antagonism' between the English & the Scotts, just as there is an ancient one between the French and the English, and the Welsh and the English ~ though nothing of the 'National Hatred ' you seem to know of.

I've known some really nice Scottish men and some fabulously lovely Scottish women too....... But as for 'hate'....!

Sash.

probably people are just sick and tired of the english sticking their noses in all the time when it is not wanted or needed

Centuries of war tend to warp the commonly held views - folklore passed down, and borders in common often lead to insults being exchanged. USA and Canada live in htis sort of relationship - I've noticed that Florida people don't care much about Canada, but Ohio people are always slagging off Canada - borders and wars. Very sad.

I am English, and I don't hate the Scottish.

In fact I think it's terrible that so many people want the United Kingdom separated into individual nations. We should be doing the opposite. It's time for a European nation.

Rillifane
I would suggest that is has to do with the centuries of oppression that the Scots suffered at the hands of the English.

Now, you may say, that explains why Scots should hate the English but not the reverse.

Well, its a general habit of human beings to justify their evil acts by mischaracterizing their victims. By describing the Scots in negative terms and working themselves up into a habit of hate the English seek an excuse for the inexcusable.

Old Fart
It appears to me that there is an organised move to drive a wedge between the English and the Scots. I just wonder who is orchestrating it and why.

I'm English but through work I spend a lot of time in Scotland. I don't think about Scottish People being any different to me but I can definately see a divide. The BBC make Scots watch England Footie matches, watch English TV and listen to all the English news too. I do think that the high up English Politicians and the like do feel that England is better but the majority of us see us all as one.

Spooky Mouse
England and Scotland dont hate each other... sure there is national pride... but look at the British army there are many proud regiments from both sides of the divide and both respect each other equally.. to be honest im from england and im not keen on the scotish accent.. however I still respect the royal scots greys etc..... we are just a mixed bunch thrown into the mix.... I bet lots of scots hate my accent.. who cares.. il still still do my best to defend as im sure they will

the Scots despise teh English fo the way we treated them... which is fair enough... weve all seen braveheart.

the Irish despise the English for the same reasons, as does half the world... not so long ago WE were the world power... and now, our members of the commonwealth, and Great Britain, seem to have gotten some balls... and like india and seek independence from state opression and direct rule from westminster...

everyone seems to like to kick us... were an easy target... but, to be English is to turn the other cheek... words are cheap, action speaks, and cannons roar... the English are coming, Lock the door...
