Why do english use stone instead of pounds?

When you ask an english person how much they weigh, they say something like "I weigh 10 stone and 6 pounds." Why is it so hard for them to say they weigh 146 pounds? I mean they are already partially using pounds to say their weight. Its really annoying for us in the rest of the world that use kilos and pounds to figure out weight and EVERYONE in the whole world has to do the math every time a british person tells us their weight.

As a Scot living in the USA here is my take on this.
No matter which system you use,Imperial(stones) or Metric(Kilo's) it is common practice to always use the highest measurement unit. Here are some examples used in America which perhaps show that the Americans are out of sync when using lbs for weight.
over here a house is 2500 square feet not 360,000 square inches
you are 5 feet 10 inches tall not 70 inches tall
you buy a quart of milk not 2 pints
you buy a gallon of milk not 8 pints
the nearest shopping mall is 3 miles away not 5280 yards
a truck weighs 1 1/2 tons not 3360 lbs
so you should be 10 stone 5lbs in weight and not 145lbs.
Any comments on this reasoning!!!????

Get over it..we're an island race and we do things our own way...most everybody can do the simple addition required to work out the difference...why do Americans on YAHOO think everyone lives in America? Someone asks a Q and many Americans answer in U.S.A. terms...mentioning U.S.A. shops or authorities....the world doesn't begin and end in America.

Kate J
Why shouldn't we? Why do Americans only use pounds and not stones?

NOT JUST ENGLAND

DONT FORGET THAT

because it works better

For ease of peoples math they can not give up their culture and style.

'Cos 10 stone sounds lighter than 140 pounds, and another thing why does an American pint have only 16 fluid ounces?

heloo
why dont americans use metric? why do they use farheneit instead of Celsius some questions will never be answered sigh...

elmjunburke
For the same reason that we use pounds instead of stone .

We're losing enough of our identity as it is, if you don't like it, Tough, we're not changing to suit you.

Because people are different. Just because America does something one way, doesn't mean everybody else should change to suit our needs or preferences. We are pretty much the newest country in the world, yet we think we know everything. It's irritating. America is an arrogant nation. We do what we want, when we want, with absolutely no regard for anyone else. It's embaressing.
