Why do most people not have clothes dryers in England?

A lot of people have washers, but almost no one has a dryer. This seems very strange to me. It's very inefficient to air dry your laundry, especially if you don't have a backyard. What makes things even worse is that it rains a lot in England. What if you're depending on having a certain shirt dry and available to you on a certain day?

Your info is a bit out of date I think. Most modern uk homes have dryers.

I am sure there are thousands of homes in the US too that don`t have dryers.

You cannot generalize about this. In any case, winter or not, Many Brits prefer to dry their laundry outside. And as a bonus, they are saving on electricity, tho that is not the main reason - helping to stave off global warming.

U must be American!!

Most people do have dryers..if they dont...they will have radiators or airing cupboards!!

you have some very strange ideas about us ... I know it's common for Americans to think that the rest of the world is not as "advanced" as they are, but this is ridiculous

the vast majority of people in England have their own washing machine, and an awful lot of people have either an integrated washer-drier or a separate tumble drier

what is INEFFICIENT about not having a drier ???? it actually is more more energy-efficient not to use a drier ... why use loads of electricity needlessly to do something that warm air will do for no extra cost

if you happen not to have a drier, and you want a certain shirt for a certain day, then you darned well hang it up in any room in the house and it will be dry by morning for heavens sake

Do you not have an airing cupboards where you come from?

People who do not have driers hang the clothes up to dry (and even people who do have driers) then put the clothes in the airing cupboard.

"but almost no one has a dryer"

How many people have you asked this question to? Almost everyone I know has a dryer. I do not use mine very often because I air clothes in the Garden (cheaper!!)

Maybe if you live in a small flat/apartment/maisonette type place you will not have one for space reasons, but then there is normally an airing cupboard or at least hanging clothes on a curtain rail with the windows open. If not there is always radiators (making sure you have some air flowing so you don't get a build up of damp!)

As for waitng on a shirt to dry, hang it up somewhere in the house and it will likely be dry by the next morning! Shirts don't take that long :-P

Where did you get that idea? Another fallacy!

everyone i know has a drier......

Niki
Nice generalization.
I have a dryer, but i don't use it. Instead i use one of those insidey airey rack things, or a sunny day. It's cheaper and it saves energy!
It's just as convenient, saves money and the world.
And if one of my shirts isn't dry ,i'll just wear another one. :/

Atheissimo
We have a dryer.

We hang the washing outside as much as possible, if not, we usually dry it on an indoor clothes drying rail that hangs from the ceiling.

Jamie
I have a dryer lol. What a random question haha. I love it. :)

you see it is reputed that brits never wash so why would they wash clothes? hence no dryer

because we are an overpopulated and very crowded small island, and therefore land and space becomes expensive and because of this lack of space, housing is smaller, and a lot of people just wont have the room in their house to have a dryer.
