I am from the USA and i am very familiar with the UK. I know it's not just England. I admire all the history from your country (countries) that make up the UK. Scotland is a beautiful place from what i've seen. I just can't understand why some of those who answer have to bash America, call us stupid and such. It's really not fair, we're a lot like you since the majority of our people descended from somewhere in the UK or Ireland (and Germany and Italy). Obviously your question was pointed at Americans, most people i am acquainted with know that the UK is made up of seperate countries. Most people i know here in America still consider the UK our closest friends, too bad you have turned your back on us just because of our stupid leader. Hasn't Scotland, England, Wales, or Ireland had terrible leaders in their past??? it's really a double standard, i wonder what the world thought of Britain when they were pushing the rest of the world around???? |

And those of us who live here know that. But there are a lot of foreigners on this page who don't know that.. They also think that Britain or Great Britain is the same. And do not understand the British Isles either.. |

I am not sure, maybe I did not pay attention in the school, but I thought for along time, that England was synonym for UK ( I am Mexican).
Now, living in Europe a colleague from UK explained me the mistake. The same with the flag, I did not know, that it is a combination of flags ( I saw the white flag with red banners during a football match...). |

For about two or three hundred years, the Island of Britain has been called England by many folk. Reason why is because in history, Wales, Scotland and even dear old Eire were FORCED to become part of England. So, the name England stuck.
Let's get modern shall we. The American Colonies of the 17th and 18th centuries were part of the ENGLISH empire and not a part of something which later became known as the BRITISH EMPIRE.
It's all tooo much for me. I'm going down the pub.

When you say the UK; most people (me included) think of mainland Britain - Britain and England; England being the bit that isn't Scotland and Wales are almost interchangeable in most peoples minds. |

Whats worse is that they think all the British speak with cockney accents. |

for the same reason you wouldn't be able to name which of our country's states are considered south and which ones are considered north (the answer isn't as easy as you may think)... cause nobody in america gives a fudge. |

The American people usually refer to England when they mean the UK. They are confused by the terms that come our way. There is Great Britain, The British Isles, The United Kingdom and just plain England.
I think that in general those that refer to England are in fact our American friends that share this forum with us. |

And the Isle of Man, too, right?
Mostly they are uneducated. I'd be really concerned if they were British and thought the UK was just England! |
