why do people in US say mom instead of mum? Why do people in France say maman? Why do people in Ireland say mammy?

Because we are different.

Meg24
Because thats how we spell it. I dont know why, but its in the Oxford English dictionary.

DavinaOpines
It's how it's spelt and how it sounds. And we don't sound the H when we say aitch Chloey, and nor do we have one accent, but many.

This is another example of you people corrupting our language. In certain parts of the country we say "mam".

Aslan

Because the word is short for mummy not mommy.

Why not. I think mum is nicer and it is our way and we do not want to change it.!!!

Why don't people in USA say mum instead of mom??????

fdm215
it's just a cultural difference...the English say Herb, the Americans say Erb!

nogolow
People in the uk do say 'MUM' but a lot of people up north say 'MAM' (more so in the north east of england) :)

Basement Bob
We don't. We say mum, ma, mama, mamma, mom, momma, mommy, mammy, mummy, mater.

I should be doing something else
Don't know to be honest why we say it! I know that Mom is the official shortened version of Mother, but I suppose to us Mum is easier to say.

♫Country Girl♫
