Why do planes supply life jacket's under your seats when you're up in the sky?

Additional Details
if the plane was to hit the water i think your not going to need one are you?

For emergency water landings. A very good pilot can ditch a plane on water without completely destroying it. This gives you time to get out with your life jacket before the plane goes down. An airplane is basically air tight so it will stay afloat for a short time if there is no major structural damage. Also the emergency slides become flotation devices as do most of the seat cushions.

to give you a false sense of security
dropping from 30,000+ feet in a tin can
your pretty much screwed

court
In case the plane is going to crash in the ocean. It makes for better visibility of the floating dead bodies.

Van
They are for in case you might have a crash landing in the water, would you prefer to drown??

voodoo chilled
because they are cheaper and smaller than parachutes and with a bit of inguenity you might be able to use one as a parachute hane you never seen indiana jones and the temple of doom?

In case you fall in to space.....its all water out there !
Not that anyone will be able to rescue you,
unless you float near enough to the space station,
and if there is anyone on it,
maybe they will pull you in,
If your still alive, holding your breath that is,
then just wait for the next shuttle,
JUST don't tell anyone that its all watery out there !
top s*******t, FBI, CIA, government stuff...
you know, nudge nudge wink wink,
funny hand shake.

"IM MANDY, FLY ME"

Im not really, (in a deep manly voice)
but i just remembered the 10 CC song.....seemed fitting,
and that was a strange song.....

boy, you really have got my grey matter going tonight,
must be the drugs,
not that i take drugs, anymore, well not for a long time,
then what is time.....
i better stop.
Nite.

if you ditch in the sea, the life jacket will keep you afloat

With ALL that space in the hand luggage cupboards I think its the right time to move them from under the seats. I always worried in case mine was not under my seat when I needed it. Is it true that the Easy Jet ones are orange?

In case of a water landing.

yabyum11
Incase you come down in water, PS don,t go on Mastermind.

Trevor h
Next time you fly over water, listen to the safety brief or read the leaflet and you'll find out! Doh

pignut
Just in case the plane crashes and lands in the sea.

A parachute would make more sense.

Kyral
Well, if youre gonna crash into the sea you wear it normally to stop you from drowning........, if youre gonna crash on land you tie it to your butt for a softer landing!!

monkeyface
In case you have to crash land in water obviously.

purple_kathryn_ni
Because if you're over water then there's a possibility that they may come in useful

A small possibility true

iknowthis
Well if you land in the sea and the plane sinks, you will be in life rafts and will need a life jacket.
But I think that it is quite silly, you can't get them out because they give you such little leg room!

In case you crash in the sea!

Paddy
in case the plane crashes in the sea, it is possible, more use to you in the middle of the Atlantic than a bullet proof vest...

Spirit of the cat
A plane can always ditch into the sea.

Stoner
no, you need to invest in a parachute, and hope you make it through the blast

petetheman
in case you ditch in the sea

THE POVES
WHAT PERCENTAGE OF THE EARTHS SURFACE WOULD U SAY WAS WATER?YOU NORMALLY FLY FROM COUNTRY TO COUNTRY ON A PLANE?ALOT OF THESE COUNTRIES ARE DIVIDED BY WATER?IT AINT EXACTLY ROCKET SCIENCE IS IT? CHANCES OF SURVIVAL AFTER DITCHING IN WATER ARE ONLY MINIMAL ANYWAY,THEY JUST HAVE THE VESTS TO MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER! ; )

Tom C
Cause when you crash, the most likely place to crash is in the middle of the ocean.

duh!
