I asked that question and apparently the postmen can throw them away with alacrity!
Why? They are biodegradable!
Will wonders never cease ? |

If it makes you feel any better, my Mailman does it here too in the US. Does it really save them so much time to not pick it up? How hard is it not to litter? |

Well, they may be biodegradable but I really don't think I can leave them lying in little heaps on my doorstep while I wait to find out! I think we should all complain and they should be recycled. |

I cant leave the house without tripping over elastic bands. |

They are warned not to do this and asked to bring back the rubber bands for re-use. I think it's an act of rebellion. A defiance of authority and a deliberate act indicating their independence. I collect them up, it saves me buying any. |

Dunno but I prob would if I was a postie. The red ones are bio-degradeable so there's worse stuff being slung about the streets for you to worry about. |

Beats me....probably because with the strong winds everyones litter is blowing all over the place and they just dont care. But when theres no wind...they still do it and think it's nothing wrong. |

Annoying isn't it. Probably trying to gain the attention of kids. . . . . fancy them. |

Huh, elastic bands, luxury. When I was a postman all we had to litter the streets with was string - we'd have killed for Elastic bands.
They probably actually do it inadvertantly - delivering mail as fast as possible. |

Until you've been a postman, you should reconsider your attitudes.
I was postman for 3 months at 19 years of age..... get to sorting office at 4am.... stacks of letters... then you have to sort each letter in to road/street on your "walk". Putting each in to a cubbyhole for that street.
Then, when thats finally done... you have to go through each cubbyhole and put them in order, so you can go house to house in order.. up the road and back down again.
Finally got out at 7:30am, or 8am... and weighed down by heavy postbags on your shoulders which dig in. Only the elder postmen who'd been there long time got the plum easy walks.
Then house to house.. putting letters in boxes is a chore.. letterboxes often snap on your fingers... i must have delivered to 300 houses a day. Its a pain... then back to office to sort second post. I was knackered by getting back time.. so i always always left 2nd post to deliver with the next days mornings post.
Who cares about a few lacky bands here and there... postmen do a top job... laden down more and more weight of junk mail. |
