Not so much as hate more a rivalry between the cities going back almost 200 years. The rivalry is similar to that between siblings or other close relatives. This is due to similar growth in the 19th Century.

In the Industrial Revolution, Manchester developed as the most important manufacturing and business centre in the North West. Liverpool expanded rapidly as the main port through which imports of raw materials cotton for Lancashire, and wool for Yorkshire were handled. the export trade via the Mersey docks came from the North and the Midlands.

They were complementary to the industrial to growth of England. Liverpool tends to be more outward looking as it is still a major port, there is a greater Celtic mix in Liverpool than in Manchester, although there is a significant Irish population there.

The differences in outlook between the cities is subtle and rather difficult for outsiders to understand.

As a Merseysider whose son is now working in Manchester , I see this question as difficult to rationalise unless the questioner was simply thinking in terms of football clubs.

Such extremely strong rivalry between LFC and ManUtd clouds the real issue of sibling rivalry between these two great Northern cities.

Ask a Merseysider and a Mancunian what they think of London and its surrounding areas, and you will get the same answer!

We dont hate each other we hate idiotic questions from outsiders who know nothing about the people from either city.

Please try and ask sensible questions rather than scouse/manc bashing ones.

Its not generic, I am a scouser and I don't hate anybody, only idiots stereotypically "hate" other people, its an old group mentality thing fromwhen we were tribes of hunter-gatherers many aeons ago.

Seen it all before
it is just local rivalry

manchester and liverpool are big cities located quite close to one another......it is just 'tribal' - supporting whichever city they come from

i don't think that they really 'hate' one another

Well, I'm a scouser and I certainly don't hate mancs. I love my own city a lot, I haven't been to Manchester for a few years but when I have in the past I have had a very pleasant time!:) Both cities have good northern down to earth people, lovely victorian architecture, passion for music and sports and many theatres, museums and galleries, in fact I feel blessed to live where I can access both cities, as well as the beautiful historic city of Chester.

As others have mentioned, it's mainly a football thing, but can also be traced back to the Industrial revolution, but I also feel it's very media provoked these days too, they love to compare and contrast. These days Liverpool's economy is lagging far behind Manchester's, although it is improving, but the media just love to constantly compare all the time about what is best in which city etc.

I never judge people on where they come from, if they are decent people I would never judge. And to whoever said everybody hates scousers, well, that's quite amusing,as I know many people who don't come from Liverpool (my boyfriend inculded) and many of them actually live in the city and they certainly don't hate scousers!:)

We are all English, lets stick together.

Scouse
Only until we meet a non-northerner and then we join forces.
Seriously the rivalry is actually far from hatred except for some silly blighters

We don't hate each other, it's a football thing only true of the sort of parochial dimwits who take football rivalry to such ridiculous extremes.

Similarly 'Mancs' are supposed hate Manchester United supporters as they aren't usually from Manchester.

In fact Liverpudlians and Mancunians are both good Northerners so are united in their distrust and hatred of crafty, thieving Londoners.

no but a lot of people who dont know any better and dont live in the area like to think so

everyone thinks its because of football, but its not.

The rivalry first started during the industrial revolution: in a nutshell Liverpool had a thriving dock system that was unrivalled anywhere in the world. Then during the industrial revolution Manchester started to thrive as they had the ship canal's, which where starting to open up new revenus of industry for the people of Manchester and it's businesses and basically they did not like Liverpool before this because of the wealth and commerce that was taking place and they had nothing but i have to add sometimes the rivalry goes a bit too far
