Hi! I was in Scotland last summer and I understood they perfectly; if their neighbours don't understand they is because they don't want. I'm looking for the day that i become to Scotland...what a wonderful place with his lovely people. I love it!!
Sorry if i write wrong...i'm spanish.

Probably because they can't - all accents take some getting used to, and the more different the accent is from what people are used to, the longer it takes for them to be able to tune in to it. It all depends on what you are used to hearing.

But for people to make sweeping statements such as 'I can't understand the scottish accent' is ridiculous, because the accent varies so much; from very strong in some areas, to quite light in others.

cos some of the language is different from town to town, city to city.ive lived in aberdeen for 17 years but have trouble understanding somone from fraserburgh.the dialect is very broad in scotland.
Kain fit im sayin, like?
say that down south and nobody would understand.
Its not cos there're being rude its just they dont know.
a roll down south is a bap
a roll in the north east is a rowie
a rowie is also a buttery.
can you understand where the confusion is coming from when people cant even agree on what a piece of pastry is called

My wife had to have the teletext subtitles on for "Rab C. Nesbitt"!

charlie
maybe because they genuinely can't

the glaswegian accent is very harsh

Because they have a really crap ear. I've lived in Oz, New Zealand, England and the US and the only time I have ever had any problems getting understood by people with english as a first language is the english.

I was working in a job in NZ where most of my time was spent on the phone. I got on fine, understood by all apart from one idiot woman from London who couldn't understand me and complained to my manager for employing someone like me in a telephone job. Manager told her to bugger off! Quite right too.

I think the south of England is just bloody lazy!!

F**k em the Scottish accent is great (apart from the Weegies)

Remember a program some years back with a character called Rab C Nesbit? O.K. I am sure the inpenatrable accent was part of the joke, but I had to put the subtitles on to have a clue what was going on.

i must admit, I have some difficulty myself with some regions!
Had to have subtitles on to watch Rab c,i do love to hear it tho'!

Cause they can't understand it, and it seems to get thicker with age, even when the Scot lives in North America for most of his life.

If they have a really strong accent it is very hard to understand, I have a Scottish mate who most of the time I can understand fine but when he starts a conversation with his mum (they are both Glaswegian) I can hardly understand a word, it's really strange but great to listen to.

dragoondf
It's all about perception and the willingness to try and understand. Saying that though, some Scotts do speak very fast with a very broad accent. I expect there are lots of people who can't understand some people from Birmingham because of the broad accent. So don't get too paranoid about the English, at least the Scotts have their own gas and oil field.

Because they are stupid.

Because when you go into a pub in Scotland they ask you if you want a paint or a he'paint. I don't want paint I want a beer!

Summer/Lover
ITS Because the Scottish accent is too thick...

e.g. :they say for "hello”.....Heellooo... extending the words & speaking the old style Scottish English,,, makes it hard for English or any other person to understand,,, by the way these days in Edinburgh(Scotland’s capital) U will see a lot of teenagers speaking modern English...

Daisy the cow
