Why do the Scots seem to hate the English so much?

I understand that there have been border issues in the past, very ancient past, and that Lady T imposed the Poll Tax on them, but she isn't in power any more and we, the people, aren't her, what other reasons are there?
Additional Details
Have just come back from visiting there and was surprised at a lot of the reactions as soon as they hear your accent, you don't have to do anything other than be English to offend them it seems!!

Have lived in the Dundee area since 1976. Spent the first 22 years policing Dundee. Was born Portland, Dorset and have retained all aspects of my English heritage. Support Scotland except when they play England.

The Scots I know will support any team that plays England. I received hate mail, hate phone call and verbal abuse from all ranks of Tayside Police from Inspectors to Constables.

I was frequently verbally abused simply because of my accent by members of the public.

My wife did not believe Scots were racist until she married me and witnessed the abuse dished out by the Scots.

The BBC are very anti-English in Scotland. They disguise their racism as 'humour'. It is, in fact, very offencive.

I am not anti-Scot or anti-Scotland. I think it is a terrific country but there are serious anti-English issues to be addressed should Scotland gain independence.

some of my best friends in the armed forces were Scots, and one of the best friends I ever had was Scot. However, when visiting this friend on the Isle of Skye on a number of occasions we both were often embarrassed by some, who he thought were his friends, by their raciest attitude to me being English. By the way CB the English were not responsible for the clearances, that was the Lairds and Scottish landowners that were to blame.

As a Scottish person living in London I have to say that I feel embarrassed that Scottish people treated you like that - you must have been in somewhere very backward. I would like to offer an explanation why some issues exist (although it doesn't excuse their behaviour). When most of the media comes from London it is assumed that the people reading/watching/listening to it is in England and Scotland is hardly ever mentioned which leads to a "what about us?" attitude. Holiday time TV programmes for are always scheduled to coincide with English school holidays which are different to those in Scotland so I grew up having to watch Neighbours - jealous of the kids who got Disney during their break. The English abroad have a certain reputation (especially young men) of being violent when they've had a bit to drink and Scots have to stick up for themselves abroad. We drink but we don't go mad with Union Jacks or anything. We have an auld alliance with France - they love the Scots but apparently the English hate the French which is something I didn't know until I lived in England (isn't it the same thing as you were complaining about?). I have to say the healthcare and schools are a thousand times better where I was from in Scotland than they are in South London so maybe in the future we can all just get along. My daughter is half Scottish and half English, I don't want her hating half of herself!

Wondering
As an Englishman who has lived in the Highlands for 5 years in the Hebrides for even longer I can honestly say I have never met a Scotsman who has hated the English. I have met a few drunken Glaswegians who, once they get to the Highlands, think they're jacobites(but as a they say in the Highlands: Lowlanders are Englishmen with Scots accents), but they are city folk & don't represent the real rural Scots, in my opinion.

Is máith liom cáca millís!
Now in fairness, don't pick on the Scots. Ask yourself who actually LIKES the English? Most people and nations would be with Scotland on this one.

And why do most people hate ye? Well you don't have a good track record now do ye?

I keep reading that Scots hate the English but the Scots I meet in England are always so charming. Maybe I'll have to pay a visit up there and see what it's all about!

penelope pitstop
That's very unfair. The Engerlish are hated by alot more nations than just the Scots.
Never mind all the historical reasons (although they are reason enough to hate the Engerlish). The fact remains that, in general, they are a very ignorant, uncultured, whiney, irritating nation with not a lot to offer.

the same reason that most of the rest of the world hates the english,
scotland hate them because of history,
ireland hate them because of history,
gemany hates them because of history,
france hates them because of history,
spain hates them because of history, (and they go to spain and ruin the place)
and there are plently of other countries that hate england!
a new reason is because of lewis hamilton, they hype him up so much, and just because you live in the UK you have to listen to it aswell. (i dont live in england.)

hope this helps

Scots 'seem' to hate the english but they don't really. Whereas most other nations 'DO'.

English buyers of the houses in Scotland have pushed the prices up so high in some areas that the locals cannot afford to compete, and are therefore having to move away from their home towns. Also schools are closing as in some villages near me 70% of the houses are used a holiday homes for mostly English people, and the year round population is demishing.
I am not a racist person, and I have many English friends but there are many reasons why English people are not popular in Scotland.

Jim
I'm Scottish and some of my best friends are English!

How far do you want to go back, Highland clearances, Culloden, Mary Queen of Scots. There have been many wars between us and now we are part of the United Kingdom and there should be friendly rivalry.

It doesn't help when English people keep going on about winning the world cup in 1966...when dinosaurs still ruled the earth LOL

Er, SOME bigoted Scots hate the English, the way that SOME bigoted English hate the Scots! (Probably the same bigoted English who hate the French, the Poles, the Germans, the E.U., and decent food!)

Stories in theMail/Express are usually trumped-up nonsense.

I remember reading one story about how an "English couple" in a small Scottish town were 'sent to Coventry' by the "racist" locals!

The truth was that they were obnoxious cockneys boasting about how well they lived in disability benefits whilst chucking their money around.

They took over everything, such as the dartboard in the pub, the rules for the card games too, they emptied the pub of customers and were generally objectionable and had to be barred.

They were probably hated where they came from too.

After all, everybody hates Londoners.

Also remember that in the wars between England and Scotland the bulk of the 'English' army comprised Scots, and the Highland Clearances were carried out by the Scottish Lairds, not the English.

As a Northerner I confess that when I am abroad I keep my nationality quiet so as not to be pestered by shirtless, lobster-red, lager-swilling slap-heads with St. George's cross tattoos from London and the South East.

I live in New Zealand and visited Scotland 2005 My ancestors are Scottish and English with a little Irish thrown in for good measure (mmm) Having visited and lived the situation from both sides lol Seems its really over the tartan and the wearing of the kilt. The Scots were forbidden to wear the tartans of their clans and kilts wer banned. It was only recently when they were awarded their own govt and have buildings in edinburgh they have at last begun to relent of the old 'hate' the english maybe it doesn't sound much for most but for the Scots it was a huge issue. It was all about their heritage and beginnings being taken away...

I agree with Carrie S on the 'what about us' issue.
I'm actually from Northern Ireland, but sometimes I feel as though some English people think they are the only country in the UK an kind of leaves the rest of us feeling like outsiders.
Saying that, I have absolutely nothing against the English at all and love England! =]

Personally speaking if I heard you had an English accent then I wouldn't be pissed off. What would annoy me though would be your attitude & frankly you come across as being quite arrogant. People in Scotland dislike arrogance with a passion. When you realise that then you'll have a better time here.

It could be that you were unfortunate enough to have encountered an idiot, but as many Scots people who go to England encounter the same problem.

It's got nothing to do with border issues or Thatcher, just common respect & good manners.

maybe its the history of constant invasions, the highland clearances and the fact that most of the decisions that affect us are still made in London even though we have a completely different culture. Or it could be that all of our news etc comes from england and we are left out most of the time. im sure this is the same for wales and n.ireland.
oh and a lot of english people are pretty arrogant most of the time

The people of Scotland*, in general, have an inferiority complex towards the English that is way too subtle for any Scot or liberal Englander to perceive. I think that they feel bad that their country is in a worst state than ours - and no, I don't see why I shouldn't say this. People would have no qualms were I to say any other country in the world had a worse/better quality of life than us.

*Actually true of all the Celtic nations that leech off us.

Angel
The English are not to keen these days on the Scots.
Think Gordon Brown, trying to wipe England off the Map, by breaking England up into regions, Why?
Do you ever hear Gordon Brown talking about England? i don't think he likes the English.

History, the Scots have long memories. As a nation they have endured many invasions by the English. We pinched their King, beheaded one of their Queens, not that they wanted her anyway, land clearances and enclosures, need I go on. Oh, and generally they lose.
