It goes back to the times of Offa's Dyke, and King Offa. The English and Welsh were at war over land and so King Offa commissioned a wall to stretch the length of the English/Welsh border - to keep the Welsh out. You can still see it in places.
I'm half English and half Welsh so that kind of puts me in the middle. lol |

Probably the same reason us Scots dont like the English.

The same reason everyone dislikes everyone, because they're different and hating them is easier than understanding :P |

i did like the welsh and didnt know that they didnt like the english untill i went there and was shocked at how much they hate us so i read a little of their history in an atempt to understand but to be honest i still dont really but the further south you go the less predudiced they become and the people are much friendlier . i hope i havent offended any one welsh but i really felt very unwelcome in the north of your country and still dont know why ,, sure you have good reason though from somewhere in history |

I should be doing something else

I didn't realise they did dislike each other?

Born a Brit I lived in Wales for five years in the 80's.
I moved from Holland to Wales and was surprised at the level of racism against the English that I found there.
After five years I realised that even though my children had been born there we would never be accepted. The Welsh name for the English is "F.E.B.'s", The E is for English, the B for those born out of wedlock and the F I will leave to your imagination..
This racism permeated through all aspects of society, the education system, legal system and in everyday life. This I found surprising as many village schools would have been closed down without the influx of children of English parents.
So in the end we moved to Scotland, a country where people like you or not depending on what sort of person you are not where you happened to have been born and where we were happy to be known as white settlers.
I still do not know why there is such hatred for the English in Wales, it cannot be just the history as the Scots and Irish were treated just as badly historically as the Welsh.
With regard to the English hating the Welsh I am not aware of any prejudice which is particularly aimed at Welsh people who live in England and the English certainly do not burn down their houses, even if they are second homes. |

I have no problem with the welsh, but just a little advise - don't buy a cottage there - unless you want to come home to a real fire! |

They don't, not really. It's just friendly rivalry. |

Go to Scotland, you will see more racism there against the English, than you will see anywhere, Scots hate the English. |

i think if u go to certain parts of wales or scotland etc u get problems with narrow minded fools, most cant get over the fact we invaded them hundreds of years ago,i think they think it makes them special,
but welsh or scots or irish living in england ..no never had a problem just when they go back. |

I am a Welshman living in the Eastern part of the Netherlands about 30 miles from the German boarder, and this has cast the situation into rather sharp relief for me.
Having a much larger, more militarily powerful, humourless, very territorially acquisitive, and aggressive neighbour on your land boarder makes you define yourself in opposition to them. The Dutch are perhaps a little more raw on the subject, and the violence was physical, where with the English, the violence was cultural.
Until the 1980s, in schools in Wales, any child speaking Welsh was made to wear a wooden tag, the "Welsh Not" around their neck as a stigma. It was passed from child to child in the class, and the last child wearing the tag that day was beaten.
The UN uses Welsh as an example of a resurgent culture. Wales was down to the last 100,000 native speakers of the language before it began investing in it, and creating art and literature in it again.
The English don't hate the Welsh any more than they hated the Boers, for whom they invented the Concentration Camp. I suppose being in charge makes you casually brutal and unempathic.
Hate is a strong word. I suppose the Welsh just didn't appreciate the attempt at homogenisation, and the enforced gift of the English language. You say "Homogenisation" I say "the destruction of my cultural identity". Let's call the whole thing off.
Apparently, people sometimes get a bit funny about stuff like that. |

i don't dislike the welsh at all and i don't think they do either dislike us its just a few sad jealous tossers but we have them in England to and its always minority i don't dislike Scottish welsh or northern Irish because we are all British
Meroving is an example of a jealous, sad, tosser but don't worry Scotland i know it is just him and the rest you are really nice he is alone in his world |

I was not aware of this. In fact I think you are mistaken.
My mother was welsh and my father English niether killed the other, and they had three children. Does that sound like dislike?
I like the scenery there, cumbria scotland ireland and even here in kent though I like the midlands and derbyshire better. Nowhere have i met anyone who has evinced serious dislike of any one of the ethinicities that together make English/British
actually to be truly british you have to be welsh but there ya goes. Maybe Charles is the reason, but he is actually German/Greek! |

Just wanted to say that history is rarely something that one can hold one's head up about. As a lover of and student of languages, this is one area that fills me with shame.
I truly think though that the English have now moved beyond a desire to see other nations' culture and especially languages assimilated or diminished. English-ness is now so deeply unfashionable as to be endangered.
Personally I'm delighted that Welsh is thriving (and Scots and Manx Gaelic also -- I wish that Cornish could also be revived as a growing, living language.
The problem isn't specific to the English, of course -- it's a history of imperialism. As any native Central American will tell you, Mayan languages once numbered in the hundreds: now only a handful survive in daily use and Spanish is nearly ubiquitous.
So it's probably a lot easier for me to say that I don't hate the Welsh (or the Scots, or the Irish... ) -- and I don't at all -- than for Cymro Bach and Vitruvius to say they don't hate the English. It takes centuries for such injuries to heal.
I am very English, though of a family probably descended from Viking/Danish settlers. |

To my knowledge,they don't.
If you are generalising, then I have seen no great hostility between the people of the two countries.
There was, maybe still is,a lot of discontent within some areas of Wales about well heeled English buying holiday homes in rural Welsh areas and driving up house prices beyond the means of locals but that is capitalism for you and I have no reason to believe that Welsh estate agents are any less greedy than their English counterparts |

Shut up you lot discriminating against our culture and language yet again . And no welsh isn't only spoken by North Walians stop generalizing. Welsh is spoken in western wales which includes South west Wales too believe it or not. Welsh is spoken by the majority in , Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire (these are in the south) Also it is still a a community language in Pembrokeshire, Swansea, Neath and portalbot and South western Powys these are again in the south . Over 90 000 speak welsh in carmathenshire which yes is in the South and nowhere else in the world contains such a high number of welsh speakers.
And we hate the english because they invaded and killed our princess took our land, Raped our women, Tried killing our language, culture and customs . In other words tried Anglicizing us !. NEVER WORKED
Welsh is now the fastest growing language per head of population in the European Union also over 40%of school children are now fluent welsh speakers who can read, write and speak welsh.
Wales is being re-welshed once again.
Cymru am byth iaith y de yn ogystal a iaith y Gogledd felly peidiwch a bod mor anghwrtais trwy ddweud bod y gymraeg ond yn cael ei siarad yn y Gogledd. |

Mmm Christine... why do you only capitalise 'E'nglish and appear to disparage anyone who calls themselves Welsh, Scottish or Irish.
Technically the Irish aren't British although some belong to the UK.
Are you suppressing something?
{Edit} Sorry about that, my response was a bit over the top to a grammatical mistake. I was feeling a bit put upon when I posted that and you got the benefit of my bile. |
