Why does the South of England have such a problem with the North of England?

As I live in the North of England, I have noticed that a lot of Southerners seem to have a problem with their Northern counterparts. I don't have any problem with the South, as my Brother-in-law is from the South, but why do Southerners in general have such a problem with Northerners? We live in the same country don't we?

I'll bet the Scots, Irish and Welsh don't have issues with each other, or if they did, they are long buried by now

They aren't like us from oop North yer naw. Them Sutherners are bluddy rude.

I dont know. I live in the South and I have no problem with Northerners, whenever I've been up North (only a couple of times unfortunately) ive found people to be more friendly than they are down here, I think its beautiful up North, would love to move up there one day.

I'm a southerner and I have no problem with the north. In fact, I live in the north now and I can guarantee you that it is very much a two-sided thing. But most of what you hear is just a bit of banter. Very few people will actually have hatred for the north/south.

Wulfruna
I've noticed that people in the south, especially in London, understand very little about the north. They believe the stereotypes that northerners are rough, poor, ill-mannered, uncultured and live in artic conditions. Northerners, I've found, tend to joke and call southerners soft. Whether they belief southerners are softer than they are I cannot rightly say. I can see differences between the two but I like them equally for different things.

I've noticed that too.

I've met some people down South (Kent, I might add) who were very arrogant and rude.
One man came up to me and said "Northerners are uneducated piss heads", I could tell by his accent he was from Kent & I could also tell he was the uneducated one!

Saying that, I have met some lovely people in the South West region who were very warm and welcoming.

The North think of the South as snobby and ignorant, the South think of the North as common and "uneducated".
It's just one of those things, Leeds and Manchester have some form of rivalry going on, too.
It's like these postcode "wars", some people just like causing trouble over petty things, cities included.

I do think people up North are a lot friendlier though.

Edit: I didn't class all people from Kent as arrogant.
I said that from those I met SOME people in Kent were very arrogant and rude, at no point did I say everyone in Kent was.
I'm very good with people's accents, met people from all over England and 9 times out of 10 I can tell which city they are from and live in, judging by their accent.

Just for you, I'll say that no, not everyone in Kent is arrogant and rude, I didn't mean for it to sound that way as yes, it is wrong to generalise all people living in one city as being the same.

I've noticed this too, southerners making dumb little remarks about us northerners.I think they're just jealous because it's cheaper and nicer up here.

I think in general we are friendlier up north. The South seems to think they are better educated than we are, and given the amount of money they receive from government (well obviously london is always going to be expensive to fund), you can see where they get this idea which begs the question......if they are SO well educated, why on earth do they all think Newcastle is in Scotland? Do their schools have geography lessons? I think they consider themselves above us but we are so more down to earth. Of course, we are all generalising here and there are loads of people down South who are very nice, it's just the reputation their part of the country has inherited from those snobby southerners who think they are better than everyone else.

I grew up in the South and I was never aware of the whole north/south thing until I went to uni with Northerners who made comments about my Southerness, lol, so I don't think that's really true.

Moorhead it is all to do with class and status the south seem to think that they are better than the north because they have more wealth.

I dont see why the problem is there we should all come to together and help each other out. If you have manners and integrity etc in my view you should not be judged because of where you are from.

There are still very well to do areas in the north but some not all of the south are ignorant to this.

slyfox69
Hi let me start by saying sammie not all of us from kent are arrogant & ignorant & by the way how do you know that particular person come from kent because of the way he spoke ? most northerners that meet kent people actually think we're cockneys & also its people like you that cause this friction just because you've met 1 person like that from kent dont class the rest of us like it because we're not !

i agree with you motorhead fan we do all live in the same country & should all be getting on instead of people like sammie having a pop at kent people just because of 1bad expierience & your asking why southerners have a problem with northerners

There isn't a divide in the UK. You will find the uncultured all over nowadays.

The south and southeast are more americanised than us up north i dont really see that as a good or bad thing and its nothing to do with the public its the politicians who concentrate on the capital and surrounding areas as to give this modern britain image, new labour forgot about the north right from the get go...i distinctly remember damon albahn going to downing street for mr blairs party with the music biz and liam gallagher no showed it (noel when but hed moved to london before hand hes a southern wannabe he fancies himself a little more cultured educated and higher on the food chain than his equally manchester born n bread brother liam)

There are good and bad wherever you go. I moved from the Midlands to Cornwall 14 years ago, and was told I would NEVER be made welcome, and the people are hateful. NOT SO.
I made it a point to be pleasant and polite to everyone, and I have experienced no problems here whatsoever.
I have also visited Ireland, and although it's deemed friendly, I experienced hostility from time to time.
My youngest Daughter lives in the Lake District, so we visit regularly. I can honestly say, the people up there are colder, and unfriendlier than down South.

I think you will find the Scots, and the Irish DO have issues with each other, as people will be people, and will always compete against each other. We always fiercly guard our surroundings, it's Human nature I'm afraid.

The Southerners generally don't have a problem with the Northerners, but Northerners like to think they do. Most comments you hear about Southerners complaining about the North are made by Northerners. Like this question here.

I'm from Sussex and I used to date a girl from Yorkshire. When I was up in her part of the world it was frequently commented on how I "talked posh" (which I don't - I have a fairly average middle class Sussex accent) and I witnessed amusement that I had never worked in a factory. I found both of these things insulting.

If there are Southerners who dislike the North, it could be because of some of these things:
1. Higher rainfall and colder average temperatures
2. Inability to understand impenetrable dialects - there is very little dialect used in the South but in Yorkshire people use phrases such as "Tha's just nesh tha scoddy greck" of which only one word is a nationally used one.
3. Northerners going on about how great places like Blackpool, Skegness etc are as holiday destinations, when everyone I know who has visited either of these places has usually found them to be a crushing disappointment.
4. Northerners gloating about how they are superior. Southerners generally do not do this (the exception being Londoners who think their city is wonderful rather than the foul polluted crime filled cesspit it really is).

As well as having dated a girl in Yorkshire and Sunderland, my grandfather was from Scarborough and we used to frequently holiday in Yorkshire so I do have experience to back me up.

The south of England has no problem with the North, it is the Northerners that have a problem in believing the Southerners are a load of softies.
