The United Kingdom is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The first three are on the island of Great Britain. |

I thought they did call themselves England? |

Why do we call ourselves the United States?
A "state" is a sovereign nation. Obviously our states are not sovereign (even though they once were). Why don't we call ourselves the "United Administrative Areas"??
In both cases, the reason is that this is the name it has been known by over a long period of time. |

Uh...most of them do call it England. Why do you care if they call it Great Britain? Look at the States:
1. America
2. U.S.A.
3. The States
4. The U.S.
5. The United States
They all reffer to the same country. |

The "great" DOES still exist, because Great Britain hasn't got smaller. It's so-called to distinguish it from "Lesser Britain" which is now part of France.
I do wish you Americans would refrain from making your pronouncements until you've brushed up on your geography.
I could go on, but I think it'd just go over the top of your head. |

Oh my God you Americans really need to learn geography!
Great Britain is Scotland, England and Wales(Not Whales), the nations on the island of Britain.
Northern Ireland with Great Britain makes the country of United Kingdom.
The Republic of Ireland(Never call it Southern Ireland) is an independent country whose government is separate from that of the UK.
The one comparable country to the UK is Spain, who is also made up of Kingdoms with their own culture and languages. |

This is how it works if we say England we mean England. If we say Great Britain or the UK we still mean England because there is nothing of importance in Gt Britian apart from England. |

Great Britain is the whole group of countries. England, Whales, Scotland, and Ireland. That would be like saying 'Why doesn't Canada call itself Mexico?' Doesn't make sense. |

Great Britain does exist. Their government is interconnected. Scotland, southern Ireland, and all those places are part of United Kingdom.
England calls itself England only that you don't Tony Blair was a British Prime minister not UK prime minister. England Soccer team, cricket team. Bank of England.
Scotland is a country but they are part of the queenship. |
