Hi everyone....I've recently moved to UK, and would like to know how does the drinking water system work here. Is it advisable to drink water from the hot water tap in the house, or should we ...
This is known as engineering hours where p-way (permanent way) workers go out to repair the track.
The traction current is turned off at night for the maintenance and cleaning. Remember that all those bits of paper thrown onto the track can be set on fire with the electrical archs from the train.

Because the tracks and signalling (and the trains) need maintenance, and you have to turn the power off before people can get down on the tracks. Apart from which, there's not enough people wanting to use it in the middle of the night to make it economically worthwhile even if it was physically possible.

Its for maintenance reasons - they need to get down onto the tracks and the power has to be off. Its not because theres 'no demand' because there is...even at 2-3am in the morning central London is still pretty busy and the night buses are always packed.

Maintenance - the system needs to be maintained so the electricity is switched off for the engineers to be able to move around. With no electricity, the trains cannot operate.
For note, there is no underground systems in the world that operates a full system 24 hours a day. Even New York shuts down most of its lines during the night and reduces services on the lines that remain operational.

In the good old days, pubs used to close at 11pm. So the tube slowly stopped operating between 11.30 and midight, after all the people had finished their journey home.
Makes perfect sense to me.

Cost and crime.
It's not cost effective because the crime rates go up at night so more policing is required.

To save money, what else.

Money? Too many criminals at night? Does London have lights yet ;-)
