Anywhere in the U.K. is less than 75 miles from the coast.
That river is befouled, and needs to stay clear for ferries and such. |

Why would people want to sit in the sand when there's:
no drooping icecream
no sun
no waves
no big giant sunhats
no cute girls in bikinis/men in swimsuits
really, we put up with all that to be with the sun and sea. Take away the sun and sea AND the waves, you got virtually nothing! |

As others have said, there did used to be beaches along the Thames. It is not as filthy as it used to be and water quality is continuing to improve. The difference is, in Victorian times not as many people swam. The majority used it for picnics or paddling. The currents mean it would not be safe for swimming in.
Paris has created a city beach and other cities around the world have created safe swimming areas as well. It would be great during a hot summer to be able to swim but it would get very crowded. You can swim in certain parts of the Serpentine and there is also a swimming lake somewhere on Hampsted Heath if that is of any use to you. |

Contrary to many opinions expressed here, it is a credible idea. At Rainham, in the London Borough of Havering, concrete proposals to do that have been presented to the River Authority. Bathing would probably by adjoining pool, due to possible polution, and dangerous currents. Until about 70 years ago, there was one there, and also in central London. Rainham marshes adjoin this area; an important wildlife sanctuary. It is being developed as a riverside walk to neighbouring Purfleet. |

Fifty years ago, people did use London beaches for leisure. There have been discussions about doing so again, but London is so built up it would take some thinking out. The Thames is a lot cleaner now then it was 30 years ago. Salmon have returned. I think this will happen at some point not too far in the future. I think it will be a very popular measure. And as for rain, we do get a fair few really nice days you know. It's a myth that it rains everyday here. |

Because everytime the tide came in it would leave a layer of brown silt over the sand. Yuck! |

It's a valid point Fiona.
But we do have a beach along the Thames in central London, it's by the tower pier, next to the tower of London. |

Very happily married.

That river is dirty, I wouldn't go in it. |
