I agree with you. I live abroad too but am British, whenever i come back to the UK even when entering the airports they are filthily, so much gum stuck to the floors and rubbish everywhere!. It's embarassing to know that people entering straight away get a bad impression of the country. |

I think you were just unlucky - or went to a nasty part of town. For a really filthy place you want to try some of the towns in Northern France! |

Yeah, weired... and it seems like we have a billion ex-communist state workers here... maybe there the ones making all of the mess?... maybe thats why there countries are so clean, because they have all come to england? maybe we should send them home? |

Maybe it's because we believe it's someone elses job to clear up, the trouble is no one seems to want these jobs. |

Nowadays, most people have no respect for the environment or other people. |

I agree with you and I live in London...always have.
Nobody takes the time to find a litter bins, people dump black bags of rubbish on street corners we have an increasing rat problem and no-body wants to take responsibility of our City.
It's true go to posher areas and things do improve.
I love London but it does sadden me when I see people dropping their litter and spitting on the floor and dog owners not taking responsibility for their dog's mess. We should take more pride in our city and country as a whole |

I was there and didnt think it was dirty. I've seen way more dirtier bathrooms (public bathrooms in 7-11s, ugh!) and the roads werent freshly paved, but its kinda hard to keep them in good shape considering how much the weather fluctuates over there. but thats my opinion. |

You live abroad & pay tax abroad? Keep your opinions to yourself then. I pay my taxes & will have a say about my country. Until you start contributing to my economy, keep your thoughts about my country to yourself. Sort your own mess out first in whatever country you call home now. Please do not return to England & that will be both our problems solved.

I live in London, it is filthy, but the countryside of England is fine in general. In the cities, it is because noone gives a toss about their community and chuck their rubbish, fag butts, chewing gum, where they feel like, so the councils are fighting a losing battle. Villages in the country are very different, the streets are clean and the local councils put effort into making things look nice. I don't think this is unique to the UK though - I have been to lots of countries and found similar issues - the south of Italy for example, in the towns litter and graffiti everywhere. Most countries, the local councils do not spread their cleaning budget equally, so some areas ie tourist ones, will be sparkling, and others filthy. |

It's because too many people live here and no one seems to care about putting their rubbish in bins except the few.
If the toilets are dirty in restaurants then they are breaking the law as there is health laws that they have to abide by so report them!! |

There is no culture of taking pride in your surroundings here. People often stick things in my hedge. I found two empty large packs of Mates Condoms in there not so long ago. A bin has been thoughtfully provided by the Council a few yards up the road. Even then, I often see rubbish about six inches away from it.
The Swiss have the right idea. If you don't drop any litter, you don't need to pay anyone to come and pick it up again.
I get laughed at by my Council Tenant neighbours, when I pick up rubbish outside my house. Sod them, I do what I think is right. |

Our education system is lousy and has been ruined by the politicians.
The kids are taught "their rights" but not their responsibilites!
Kids are not taught pride and their elders (also having no pride in their country) give them bad examples to follow.
I agree about most European countries but also Japan which is almost spotless with virtually no crime.

I know some areas aint brilliant but sayign that, when I visit Spain, Turkey etc they can hardly call their streets the cleanest in the world can they. Some of the sites I see are disgusting, almost 3rd world like! |

I also now live abroad having been born and lived in the UK for over 40 years - and I agree with you and it is one thing I sure don't miss about the place. Sadly I think it is down to people who don't seem to care about littering the streets and the fact that the UK is so greatly over-populated. I don't think that all restaurants in the UK have dirty toilets and if they do this should be most certainly pointed out to them. |

? hav you ever used the loo's in turkey, cyprus, benidorm?
I admit that some public loo's are dirty and its because the government spends more on fat people, con artists and cars than on most other things. |

It's all due to those damn child labour laws... back during the "Good Auld Days" of the 16th Century... they used the poor children from the homes, to keep the streets and toilets clean.. but those kids are in schools now and they can even have a second bowl of porridge at breakfast... so the country goes to hell... |
