The site I found had Manchester as the 9th largest city (ie population).
However there is contention that either Manchester or Birmingham are both the 2nd city as in the 2nd most important (financially, culturally etc).
I suppose it depends what survey you read. |

Traditionally Manchester has been the third largest city after London and Birmingham. I think currently however Manchester is currently the second largest city with Birmingham being the third largest. Manchester has traditionally been know as the third largest though as I say. |

The population of Manchester in 2003 was 422,300.
I'm from Manc but I personally think that that number is misleading as that's the actually the population of Greater Manchester the Metropolitan County which includes: -
Bolton, Bury, Manchester (city), Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford & Wigan.
Over half of that figure is the population of Wigan which isn't even in Manchester technically.
I agree with the above Manc haters as Leeds is by far the superior city. Don't be fooled by the size, it's expensive to live here in comparison & it's mostly a scally filled dump! |

Because its third in relation to population after London and Birmingham! |

Where I live, Manchester is known as the UK's T*rd city
(not by me 'though, I quite like the place.)
I think it's quite a tough one as a huge chunk of what people refer to as the city of Manchester is actually the city of Salford.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong |

Go to your local library and ask the Reference Department for help. They are trained to find almost anything. |

Because the city centre has a relatively small population, compared to the 5 million metropolitan population around Manchester. |

Manchester has a population in 2005 of 400 000 where as Birmingham has a population of more than 1 million (Figures: Office of National Statistics)
Birmingham is therefore much more superior than Manchester in both size and culture. (Manchester was voted the 17th worst place to live in the whole UK during 2007!) |
