Why is the UK so much more expensive than the rest of Europe?

I just can't understand how a country can be twice as expensive than its neighbours. Cigarettes in the UK cost an average of 9 Euros, in continental Europe it's 4 Euros. Alcohol is nearly 3 times as expensive in the UK, food is extortionate, accommodation is unpayable. And property prices are unbelievable, yet British houses are built to a much poorer standard than those found in continental Western Europe. How do you British put up with it? You live in such a beautiful country, few countries can match the beauty of the UK, yet the average UK household is in 20000 Euros of debt (excluding mortgages). Your standard of living is dropping the fastest of all EU countries, because the debt crisis is starting to come back and haunt you. I hope it gets better for you soon, I'd love to buy a house in England because the countryside is so beautiful, but I'd never be able to afford it.

Most companies' profit margins are huge here; there is a general aura of inefficiency and dysfunction permeating most enterprises too which pushes up their base costs. I too love and adore the British countryside and it is the main reason I continue to live here. In doing so I have had to come to terms with the fact that Britain is a debt ridden lunatic asylum.

And yet everyone wants to come and live here.

Houses aren't all built bad. Depends where you are. You'll get the same in any country.

It's because we have got rid of all our industries and manufacturing, allowed in unbelievable migrant levels to the extent the country has no income. The only way is to burden the tax payers with taxes with the subsequent knock on effect of high prices. The more we pay, the more tax is generated.

In short, it's our crap, greedy, wasteful government

It's not expensive if you're one of the rich in the UK. Fortunately for them, the UK poor are too stupid to realise this. They just tolerate their outright exploitation. For instance, everyone is told that the Poverty Gap gets wider every year ("Commie government" - haha) but they don't make the link that if everyone accepts a 2% wage increase then those earning more will benefit proportionately more and of course the Gap will widen. Houses became more expensive not because peoples' living standards improved it was because houses are seen as investments. They are investments for those who buy property as a second dwelling or to develop it for resale or rent, but if you are a house-owner it is not an investment at all as you still have to buy another house if you sell your own and that will be proportionately the same value as the whole market price rises; the losers are those without property, the gainers are landlords and wealthy developers. As investors take their profits and sell properties, the price will fall and recent buyers will lose money - negative equity. Debt rises and banks rub their pudgy hands as they reclaim the mortgages and make people homeless. In Europe most people prefer to rent rather than buy property and I think - I don't know - this means that housing has to have competitive rents which keep prices down; this spins off on the cost of property if less people are willing to buy. Subsequently wage inflation should be less drastic if housing cost remains stable.

I feel Britain will wake up soon. If you don't help the poor, eventually the poor will help themselves.

They don't call it "Rip-Off Britain" for nothing. And we are not "putting up with it". The problem is, we can't LEAVE because the banks have us by the gonads and we are just trying to tread water and get by while we watch the rest of the civilised world enjoy their fair prices and decent wage increases.

Space is now our problem. The UK is about the same size as some of the smallest states in the US and yet we have a population of 20% of the US. We have some of the densest housing in Europe but no one will use public transport!

As to putting up with it! Our country has been very lenient with who it allows in, compared to most of Europe. But this is not reciprocated to those of us who would wish to leave.

While high wages, high sales taxes and a strong currency are all factors, the biggest single factor is almost certainly property prices.

Oslo, Paris, Copenhagen and London are now the four most expensive cities in the world, says the Economist Intelligence Unit in its latest report on worldwide cost of living.
