Why is there such a huuuuuuuuge price difference in houses in the South of England Verses the North?

It is because us people in the South are evolved and live in nice comfortable houses and apartments that other poeple want to buy.

Ooop Norf, they are unevolved Neanderthals that still live in caves that no-one wants to buy.

It's all to do with supply and demand. People want to live in the South because that's where the well paid jobs are. There's not enough housing to go round, so people selling can ask a huge premium to sell to those with well paid jobs. In the North, there's not so much demand for property and there are fewer people earning big salaries to inflate prices - so people sell for what they can get.

The downside is of course that people in less well paid jobs, like policemen, nurses, firemen and teachers can't afford to buy houses in the South.

As a northern Lad I could say its because Southern Softies are daft enough to pay it. or quote Mark Twain 'Buy land; they have stopped making it'
But its supply and demand nearly. When the MOD bless their cotton socks gave away, sorry sold for a pittance the housing stock it owned; the tax haven, sorry company that stole them managed to sell enough of the Southern ones to cover their costs completely in the first year, after that it was all gravy. And even the Catterick married quarters went a satisfying Kerching at the cash register!
The answers below are all truish, but whether wages push prices or prices push wages is hard to say.
The only consolation is that by avoiding the south I have managed to almost afford to live comfortably, God knows how the Softies who are not stock brokers manage

Angel
You want to look at these places up North & see how expensive house prices are,

Cheshire Stockbroker Belt,
Lake District,
Yorkshire Dales,
Saddleworth,
Chester,
Northumberland,
High Peak District,
South Manchester,
Parts of Leeds,
Ribble Valley,
The Whyre,
North Yorkshire Moors,
Marple,
Wilmslow,

The North is not just Mill Towns, believe me,

the great north south divide.

Houses are generally more expensive in cities and large towns as well

more people in south than north so supply and demand would mean that house prices would be pricer

Because a) there are more people and therefore more demand for houses in the South, because b) there are a lot more well paid jobs in the South.

I live in the NE, I wouldn't live anywhere else, the south is much more known about...i.e. London, its just that hardly anyone knows much about the north becaus ethey all have such dim prejudices about it that are based on generalisations of a few bad places, let me tell you, the south has its fair share of crap, and you aint gonna get blown up by a terrorist in the north either so there.
