It isn't. Only Americans use the term jaywalking.

PinHead
It isnt in the UK we have no such offence its an American term

Ѻ
It is a compound word of the words jay and walk; "jay" refers to a foolish rural person—a rube—unfamiliar with city ways. No historical evidence supports an alternative folk etymology by which the word is traced to the letter "J" (characterizing the route a jaywalker follows).

I don't know, maybe someone was crossing the motorway while reciting the alphabet and only managed to get to J.

BRIAN C
Not just walking on a motor way - any illegal and/or irresponsible crossing of a road is known as JAY walking, A Jay being a foolish person. The term is not used in any UK laws .

Katie F
I used to think jay walking was escaping from prison until a few years ago!

A Singaporean girl I knew was horrified when I walked across the road without waiting for the lights. Let me clarify; there was no traffic!

If you walked on the motorway, you would be called a schph. Onomatopoeia for you!

Tis an American term.

Miss You Tommy :(
I have never seen anyone walking on the motorway! I go up the M27 & M3 everyday... :s
