Will I need snow chains to drive up to Scotland with next week? I've heard it's pretty bad up there.?

Or would I be better to leave the Volvo S60 at home and go in the hubby's Hilux?
Additional Details
So, currently, the snow isn't as bad as we're lead to believe down here! Wouldn't go north of hte border at any time of year without wellies & umbrella, LOL!

Depends on where you are going. Why not take your volvo they are great in snowy conditions and safest by far of all cars when dealing with wintery conditions and you won't need snow types.

Unless you are heading for the ski slopes or remote highland country roads I would advise against the use of snow tyres though they are personal choice and I suppose you could hit worse conditions at Penrith than you would in scotland.....so the choice is yours.

I'm about 40 miles from the cairngorms and whilst it is snowy conditions up there the rest of Scotland appears to be snow free not unless you know something I don't.

But hey ignore me as we could be blanketed in snow tomorrow 4 seasons in one day here.

depends where about you're going. no snow in aberdeen....just rain...and LOTS of it!! :o)

johnboy
theres snow in the north and highlands but the central belt including glasgow, edinburgh is fine but a bit rainy.

Basement Bob
We do have proper motorways & road gritters you know. We even have electricity here now. We get TV next year.

rosie recipe
I lived there for ages and never used snow chains - they're for the Alps!

Scobill
If you are going to the central belt then no you don't , we are not exactly in the arctic up here !!
In the highlands then you need to be more careful , but all the main roads will be treated and if it is so bad , individual roads may be closed for a day or two
Hope you enjoy your trip , although the weather for the past two days has been awful

No snow in Glasgow. Edinburgh had snow last week tho

Beastie
Not unless you're planning on heading for a ski resort. And probably not even then.
Judging by the weather here (here being just west of the Forth Bridges by Edinburgh) you'd be better advised to bring water wings.
It's been piddling down rain since about ten this morning.

Jim
You'll be OK in a normal car. There's little or no snow in the borders and the temperature is forecast to be around 5C for the rest of the week.

xxshortyxx
no snow just lots of rain in central scotland

Lady Isis
I live in the Borders and it's snow free at the moment ! It was pretty bad but we managed !

PS Angel I am English and live here ! Brilliant people.

Lew
The way it's pouring down here, in Edinburgh, you'd be better bringing your water wings and wellies.

Aye. Right!
No snow here! (Halfway between Inverness and Aberdeen).
I can see the mountains up Wick way are pretty thickly snow-capped, but even then, the roads will be clear, so unless you're planning off-roading, you wont need snow chains!

Depends where you are going. All main roads in Scotland are open (including the A9 and A90 north of Perth).

If you are going to the ski-fields, then most access roads have been cleared of snow, although some minor roads will have snow on them.

Snow chains are rarely needed in Scotland south of Perth, and even north of Perth their use will be limited. Remember that most main roads in the Highlands have snow gates, which are closed when it becomes too dangerous to drive on them (ie without chains).

Also remember than when you come off snow, the chains have to be removed as their prescence reduces tyre adheshion.

The forecast for the next seven days is rain (lots of it), which may fall as snow on isolated hills in the south and across much of the Grampians
