Will people in Belfast accept me?

Ok I've been raised in Los Angeles for most of my life, but when I was 5 my family and I moved over to Ireland because my dad is from there and my mom's parents are from there. All my family on my dad's side lives in County Longford, but we lived in Westmeath. Then when I was 8 I moved back to LA. I hate LA, and have been planning on moving back to Ireland for a while, and I kinda want to move to Belfast. When I was living over there, whenever we went up to Belfast, I really liked it. My grampa was from Belfast, and his dad died in the IRA during independence. Anyway, I'm not like people from America, and even my grandparents and cousins and aunts uncles, etc over there tell me that. I want to move to Belfast for college, but do you think people will accept me, despite me being first-generation Irish American? (Remember all my family lives over there, I'm full IRish, and have lived over there, but most of my life in LA). Don't tell me not to move there, I know about all the troubles and stuff. I'm really proud of being IRish and Catholic. That's not my question though; pleas ejust answer my question and don't give you're opinions on whether I should move there. I'm sorry is I sound like an a$$, but I don't know any other way to say that. I'm not being mean, so please don't get made at me. Thanks a lot people.

A lot of Irish people don't like Irish-Americans... And this is Belfast....

Yes you will be accepted but you seem to be rather proud of the fact that your great-grandfather was an IRA terrorist and you will not make many friends if that is your attitude. Most of us are against terrorism you know.

well if you're going to harp on about how irish and how catholic you are then not everyone of the same persuasion is going to like you , you must know this, you are diversifying yourself.

Bury the religion part - proud religion is the biggest problem in NI

If you don't bring religion or politics into any conversations you should be ok. However going by the content of your question I think Dublin would suit you better.

Of course they'll accept you, its just like anywhere else why wouldn't they.

O aye, the people will accept you alright, One thing we are known for is our hospitality and friendliness.
However, *one piece of advice* DO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH DISCUSSIONS ABOUT OUR POLITICS; especially about your background, I'm not saying you should be ashamed of it, what i can say if, you started to talk about your above history in company you don't know, you might get individuals, especially if they have got drink on them, mightn't appreciate your family history and could take offence to it. So to use an old saying of mine " the man that knows to say nothing knows to say a whole lot!".

Lynne
I don't see why not. I would just be careful of voicing a) religious ideas and b) political ideas in certain parts of the city. I am glad to say that Belfast is quickly becoming a very accepting place and we enjoy different people from different cultures coming to our wee city. Belfast is a lovely place to come to, and you should have no problems at all.

Just go and as long as you make every effort to integrate and don't go on about how great the USA is you should get on fine.

Ok, that sounded more like a life story not a question, anyway, Belfast is great city and people are very very nice and friendly..The whole thing with IRA doesnt matter for young people and thats the kinda people you will meet by going to college..I do not see why you even have to ask this question..?? Im going to Belfast like every month and I absolutely love it there..I even applied for internship there next summer...Would move there tomor if I could...Dublin sucks and so is the rest of the couties in the Repulic..
