The answer is no. Scotland putting all it's hope in dwindling reserves of North sea oil and gas is like Iceland putting all it's hope into Banking. Small countries are vulnerable to economic disaster. I think that Scotland does very well indeed economically from being part of the UK. I don't think Scotland could afford to use it's own revenues to pay for free social care and free University tuition for it's own citizens. SNP supporters should be careful what they wish for because they might get it. |

It can't leave Britain because Great Britain is an island. It could seperate itself from the UK, I suppose. |

In this day and age, probably not
If it had happened before the 60's, when Britain sold off all of the north sea oil, then scotland would be rolling in the money right now.
Also if they still had all the fishing rights, but they're gone too.
other European countries can fish in our sea's as much as they like, but we're stuck with quota's and such like |

Not now, no! if it had happened years ago like Heywood said it would have been different, but then, they suppressed all the information relating to just how much oil there was, didnt they?. I would say the only leeches are the English government! |

Some of the SNP talk is pseudo economics and stupid nationalism. however, the Scottish economy currently does pretty well. But one has to keep in mind the current downturn in financial services market- which is a big chunk of Scotland's economy. As for the oil question the SNP do talk some rubbish here but on the reverse Scotland is actually quite far ahead in terms of new-energy production, so could see a great rise in the energy market. The real point about Scotland becoming independent is that it could control its own budget, borrowing and lending rates. this would see more control giving to the Scottish Government over fiscal policy and would allow Scotland greater capital with which to expand its economy. So its a to and fro argument. Scotland would gain in some areas but would lose out in others. As for the rest of the U.K. it wouldn't be great if they lost the attraction of Scotland in terms of tourism and indeed the financial, oil, fishing and forestry industries. As well as the huge loss in terms of education and energy resources |

The GERS ( Government Expenditure and Revenue Report for Scotland ) Report is quite catagoric . The GERS analysis shows Scotland in surplus on the current budget in both 2005/06 and 2006/07.
With a current budget surplus in 2006/07 of over £800m - in the context of a UK deficit of over £4bn - the flow of resources from Scotland to the rest of the UK is some £1.2bn.
This year's GERS publication has been informed by an updated and detailed analysis of North Sea revenues by Aberdeen University, enabling a geographical share to be allocated to Scotland's accounts.
OK ? |
