The person who answered above me (Fuentes) has the correct answer. So rather than repeating what he said, I am just going to provide you with the links which detail all of the requirements, fees, application forms and procedures to obtain the necessary visas and information about work permits. |

United States citizens need work permits if they are to be employed in the United Kingdom. Permits must be secured before arrival; failure to comply with this requirement may result in refusal of entry to the country. The responsibility for securing work permits rests with the prospective employer. Applications take a minimum of eight weeks to process.
Business and Self-employment. U.S. citizens seeking admission to the United Kingdom to establish a business, whether individually or in a partnership, must first obtain an entry clearance from a British diplomatic mission abroad - this will be a British Embassy, Consulate or High Commission. |

Other have answered the work questions. So I'll comment on the cultural one.
Being well educated is no guarantee you will adapt well to the culture of UK. Yes we speak roughly the same language, but are different in many ways.
My boss is US citizen, has lived in UK for 18 months now. But he has not adapted at all to the different ways of doing things (public transport not cars, when to tip, prices etc etc). All stuff that he should be able to get to grips with during the first month or so.
So definitely come for a couple of weeks holiday first and see whether you can handle this place! I know a holiday can be different from work, but at least you get to know the culture a bit |

No, you should have no trouble emigrating to England if you have a skill. You would be especially welcome if you want to start a business here. Private healthcare is booming here and I am sure that your skills would be welcomed. You would probably need a sponser to move here, either an employer or someone you know who would support your application. Don't worry about being accepted, this is one of the top immigrant destinations in the world. Why not visit England for a short period and see what the opportunities are? Good luck.l |

it depends how well you deal with change. a well educated American, or just an American (lol I'm American too!!!) would adapt pretty well, it depends where from America you were from. You'll pick up the new words fine and Bob's your uncle! cheerio, have a good time moving! |

Doubt it ....speak with the immigration authorities or check out the internet for a website that will give you specific entry criteria. |

Yes, an 'educated american' would have a substantially difficult time because of their undeveloped or lack of skills. |
