Would you rather live in America or the UK?

Please tell me why, and not just because the grass is greener over there!

The US. I have this thing about the government telling me I can't defend myself against tyrannical government or common criminals, and disarming me. You should read the famous jurist Blackstone. He was British. Once upon a time, the British people had rights. The right to keep and bear arms is the linchpin upon which all other rights are derived, as if you cannot defend your rights, you effectively have no rights. It doesn't help that the per capita rate of violent crime in the UK is drastically higher than it is in the US (this became a serious problem in 1997, coincidentally when the UK decided it was a good idea to deprive their subjects of the inalienable right to keep and bear arms). Londonistan doesn't help either. I prefer not to live in a society teeming with radical Islamists. Radical Islamists I can't defend myself against, thanks to Parliament.

I can't answer that question. It would depend the circumstances which brought me to the US or UK - job, girlfriend etc. It would also depend on whether I developed a cadre of friends and the sense of community I felt - the intangibles that make a place feel like home.

If by America you mean the USA I think I would rather live in the UK as long as it included a decent job. The history & the beautiful castles, gardens, etc. are a huge draw. It must be amazing to walk around &/or touch something that people have been in or using for hundreds or thousands of yrs. Plus I love what to me are the accents! The generally mild climate would be a nice change too.

I live in North America but not the USA.

Hi

I have relatives and friends in both in America and in France and they all have been to both the UK and the US

Most prefer the UK because they see it as alot more cultured in a sense (even the pubs have there own culture) though London itself is pretty expensive. Plus From the Uk you can travel rather easily through all of Europe. Its only a 2/3hr train ride to Paris from London. Theres so many major sites in Europe that most cant enjoy in a week long holiday either.

To be fair though, there are some things they like about the US aswell. The US is obviously way bigger and because of its size, theres so many different areas, such as, New York, Oregon and that up north and places like Texas and Florida down south.

From a crime persepctive they all seem to think in big cities that the UK is alot safer, and that its mostly tourists that have the problems

I havnt been to the UK or the US myself as of yet but from all i know, hear and see from my family and friends i would much rather live in the UK (Plus im a sucker for anything european basically, particurally men :))

To crowt or whatever his name was, in lots of countries such as Australia where i come from, people arnt hell bent on owning weapons, it would scare most people here to know that walking down the street half the people have guns. Also from having a friend who originally came from Iraq, i find it offensive to say that London is teeming with crazy bombers, he lived in London for a year and he didnt meet 1 radical muslim person at all, though he did meet alot of tourists that seemed to think that were all bombnuts

The UK. It's far safer than the US. If you don't believe me, in 2005-2006, you were six times more likely to be shot to death in the US than murdered by any means in the UK, including the 52 people killed in 7/7. The legal system is more effective in the UK and court trials don't rely on the showman-like ability of the lawyers involved. The parliamentary system of government in the UK is more flexible than the United States, which has a president with massive amounts of power compared to foreign counterparts. The government is too right-wing for me in the US (as it is in the UK!), and a welfare state is non-existent. US Foreign policy has recently been a failure (NAFTA leading to one in six Mexicans becoming homeless, War on Terror). It's just disappointing that the UK got involved!

O
I have been to both so you wont find any typical narrow thinking such as "I live in america, therefore america." jeez. Waste of good brains..

PLEASE NOT: I am both Welsh and American.

I would personally, live in the UK. I do like it here in America, but I have lived in Wales (UK) for most of my life.
But I love Wales, its a great place. It is small and out of the way, people are generally nicer and no one will punch your face in if you say you are democrat or republican. I dont like England too much because they dont allow the Welsh to make their own laws but hey, what r u gonna do?

Wales is simply amazing, no, the UK is simply amazing..I am hoping to go back to Wales during the summer. It is my home and I want to go back.

but America is a very nice place too...they both are.

UK, specifically Wales, specifically right here. Actually, I'd be happy anywhere in the UK (apart from Hull - did you see those floods?!). I have been to Florida, which is obviously in the USA. I'm sorry to break this to all of you who prefer the US, but I found the food to be awful! We went to a supermarket that only stocked fresh poultry at Thanksgiving or Christmas!!! What on earth do you do until then? Live off chicken nuggets? I do acknowledge that this was maybe a rural part (Anna Maria?), but come on. Our sausages are also a billion times better.

Apart from the food, I could probably live quite happily in Florida. But I need my food. A lot. I also quite like conversing everyday in Welsh, which is something I wouldn't have in the US. And your schools have no uniform! I'd die if I had to decide each morning what I was going to wear. I also prefer our exam system, despite there being more of them. Prepares you more for university, in my opinion.

I can't really comment on the weather, because it varies so much within the US, but I did prefer Florida to Wales on the weather front! So that's something I envy. And the theme parks. But obviously, not all of America is like this.

I'd probably feel different if I'd been brought up on the other side of the pond. But as it is, Wales will always be my home.

Although I've never been to the U.S.A., I still would prefer to live in the U.K.,England specifically,London more precisely.Reasons,I like it here,it's home.America doesn't really appeal to much,I'll stick with Europe if I want to see the sights abroad.
