This is a trick question.

The question suggests that it asking what point is 13 miles from Sunderland. But, regardless of the route taken, the first few miles of the journey will be in built-up areas with a 30mph speed limit. In reality, an average of 20mph on some of these roads is being optomistic, unless it is 3am in the morning!

There are a number of routes between the two cities.

My choice would be west on the A1231, Eastern Highway, the A1 and the A184 to approach Newcastle city centre from the south west - twenty minutes after leaving Sunderland I would hope to be approaching the Angel of the North.

Another way would be north-west on the A184 into Gateshead and then over the Tyne into Newcastle city centre - twenty minutes after leaving Sunderland you should be approaching the junction with the A194(M).

A combination of the two would be west on the A1231, then north on the A19 and A184 into Gateshead - twenty minutes after leaving Sunderland you should, again, be approaching the junction with the A194(M).

It depends on the traffic!! You'd be in Newcastle I'd say if you were in a car.

If you used our glorious North eastern public transport system, you'd be lucky to be at South Shields in twenty minutes from Sunderland Park Lane station.

13miles closer to Newcastle
