Zebra person

A question for Americans..?

Are you anti-Russian? Do you hate the Russians?

Just wondering. From what I've been seeing here on Y!A, Americnas think Russia is some sort of underdeveloped country full of bears and beggars and prostitutes and mafia, under a totalitarian commuist government.

Do you really think like that?

thanks

No way do I believe all that.

Sure it has its undergound mafia just as the USA does but I think they are far past the years as in the early 90s and is not underdeveloped or full of beggars and prostitutes.

They are no different as humans than anyone else is. I would not call them backwards. thats just my view point.

No, I don't think that at all.

Old stereotypes die hard and the things you mention describe what was thought of under the former Soviet regime.

HouAnswerGuy
Considering my paternal lineage comes from there I sure hope not.

Dancing in Misery
I'm sure that's there.....but that's here too.. I can't speak for all of American, but I don't. I don't have any issues with Russia or Russian people.

I have been to St. Petersburg and loved my trip. Maybe when Russia was a Communist state, we felt that it was a bit dangerous.

No, I don't hate all Russians. I once worked with a woman of Russian descent that I did not like, but even other the two other people there that were also Russian did not like her, so her heritage had nothing to do with it.

We have the same problems (crime, etc) here. I think in a lot of ways it is like the US (people gripe about going to work, enjoy shopping, etc) but I am sure there are differences too.

Sweet_Di
No I don;t hate Russians why would I? people are people no matter their race there is good and bad in every race

Skittles are M & M wannabees
It's a stereotype, but no we don't all really think like that. Do you think ALL Americans are loud, fat and lazy?

I personally don't. However, I think a lot of those people who do not like Russians are children of the Cold War era. There was a lot of propaganda around that time saying that Russians were evil, etc. etc. My generation is not so much anti-Russian as it is anti-Arab, and we are that way because of 9/11 and the wars we are in.

warewolf77
I have no problem with Russia or the Russian people.

Well I don't think THAT however I am a travel agent and I have travelled to Russia with a group of travel agents and the people were NOT very friendly in St Petersburg and Moscow....it was almost as bad as New York City...

No--there's a lot of ignorance about international issues in the U.S., especially from people who haven't traveled or met people internationally. The ignorant tend to stand out more in that regard than those in the know.

Yeah, I do.

I have visited Russia, and wasn't too thrilled with the military checkpoint in St. Petersburg that, in reality was a shakedown for money. I wasn't happy with the miles of red tape I had to go through to tour there. I wasn't happy with the price I paid.

While I really liked the Russian people, I thought your country was a pigsty.

I don't have anything personal against Russia or Russians but isn't the country under communist rule? Just how much freedom does the people of Russia have any way. From what I have studied in history class and have read in the
papers Russia doesn't completely trust the US.

cajundude1
Well as an American I wonder why Russia is upset about us putting up missile defense. Does that mean they have plans to destroy our civilization? As human beings we can get along. People are generally the same all over the world. In fact I have a Russian Olympic Coin collection. I have plans to one day sell it to a Russian. I only dislike people who wants to kill me.

Wicked Mickey
In comparison to the US, Russia is an undeveloped country. You could argue with the comparison of land area they're likely to have more bears than we do, just because of larger expanses of habitate. "Underdeveloped" is a matter of opinion. Some think the US is "overdeveloped" especially if you're trying to sell a development.

Russia is a fine source of prostitutes and sexworkers. The "gentlemen's clubs" here in the west have quite a few Russian immigrants working there (they typically are my favorites but that's beside the point).

I live in an area with a mild climate and we have quite a few beggars; they're part of the fabric or the city (Portland, OR).

I think there are certainly more communists in the Russian government than the US government, but this is likely due to people still around from prior to the revolution.

I also think Russia has enjoyed quite a economic bounce from our oil futures speculators.

Now, do I consider Russia much different from Canada? Not really.
