A question has been bothering us- are there 50,51,or 52 states in the United States?

Some are saying that D.C. is a real state and that Pourto Rico is now considered a state. I say there's still only 50!! Does anyone know for sure?

50 States. Puerto Rico and Guam are territories. District of Columbia is not a state for political reasons.

50! DC is not a state

dablaze
There are only 50 states.

The District of Columbia (DC) is not a state -- Congress has absolute legislative power over DC, although there has been a limited home rule since the 60s.

Puerto Rico is not a state. It is a commonwealth. They could vote to become a state if they wanted to -- they could vote to separate from the US too! -- but they haven't voted to do either so far.

(DC can't vote to become a state -- it would require a constitutional amendment.)

There are also other non-state territories in the U.S. that are not states, like Guam. But there are only 50 states!

There are only 50 states. 48 in the continental united states. The other two are alaska and hawaii, to give you the big 50. puerto rico isn't a "state," we own it pretty much but they still aren't a part of the USA.

There are only 50 states still. Puerto Rico is a commonwealth, and DC is not considered a state.

DC is not a state, is is a district. If I rember correctly, there is no housing in DC eithor.

Puerto Rico is not a state, it is a commonwealth in association with the United States

Final answer, there are 50 states

For those of you who typed 51, you should be ashamed, and catch back up on some reading.

You do know that the D in D.C. stands for "District", correct? Its a District, not a state. Neither is Puerto Rico or Guam. Its only 50.

Michael L
It's still 50
D.C. is not a state, it's a District.
Puerto Rico is a U.S. Commonwealth- and while it does enjoy many of the benefits of statehood, it is not a state.

tommy two tone
I think there just still 50

Jay Blacksheep

There are 50 states. Period. Puerto Rico is not a state, or a commonwealth. PR is a territory of the US. DC is basically it's own separate entity (the federal government).

There are only "50" genuine states. PR, DC, U.S. Virgin Islands, America Samoa, Mariana Islands, and Guam are only "U.S. Territories" or "common wealths" They are not states.

bill w
Oh, for Heaven's sake! There are 50!

Unless you include Canada *prepares for a flamestorm*

bailes5625
There are only 50. D.C. is a district within a state and Puerto Rico is only a territory that would like to become a state.

liebedich85
There are 50 states. Puerto Rico is a common wealth, and D.C. is not considered a state.
