Am I dreaming...Or is this something I can do?

I finish school in June (thankfully), I could either stay here and try get a job and work over the summer, but I really want to go to New York City.
I live in Ireland by the way so it's quite the trip ! I wouldn't mind it though, but I don't know anyone, and where would I live, and where would I work? I'd be going on 19 but I don't look my age at all, I look young. I doubt it would be a good idea, huh? I'd prob get kidnapped and sold or something lol.
Advice?

I suppose it don't HAVE to be NY (I just love it there, been twice =]) London be nice. I know that city better. But, is it that easy, do you just pack up what you own and move, cross your fingers and hope for the best...am I crazy to think it's this easy?
Any help would be great, thanks ...

I can just imagine being sold to some street whore or something, or a woman named Derek. LoL.
I dunno, I say I'll go to college here first then move over, it be easier to get a good job if I'm college educated I guess.

I would definitely visit first and try to find a job and an apartment before making a final move here. I can't imagine being homeless in a strange city and country would be that much fun. Would you be willing to wait tables? That might be your best option to get started here.

Best of Luck!

I suggest you apply for one of the universities, then once accepted you can come in on a student visa. You'll have to look into what papers you need to work legally too.

While it would unlikely that you may be kidnapped or sold, NYC is not a nice place. You would need to find a job. Which means you would be competing with thousands of skilled, experienced people who are looking for jobs in NYC. My ancestors moved to the US from Ireland many years ago. Obviously some of them survived. But times are more difficult now than they were back then.
London would be a better choice. It's closer to home and you would get a real taste of big city life. Develop a skill there,
then come across the pond and put your skills to work.

Bro i just want to say live your dream. If you want to go to NY then by all means go to NY. Follow your dreams. If you don't go you will regret it and always wonder what could have been.

It won't be easy. You need papers if you want to work legally (green card or work VISA). You can forget about the green card lottery, Brits and Irish are ineligible since its a diversity lottery and there are already too many Irish and Brits working in the US.

The only other way it through a work VISA. To get one you need to be sponsored by and employer and have a skill in need. Your best bet would be to get a Bachelor's degree, Masters or PhD would be better. Get a job with a US company in Ireland or an Irish Company with US offices and after a few years look for an internal transfer.

There is always the illegal route however, INS is cracking down (even harder now that the economy is in the tank). If you get picked up, it won't be pretty. Count on be sequestered at an INS facility for months before your case comes up and then deportation.

most employers will only give you the time of day if you live in new york so if you decide to come you should have a pretty good size bank role and having a degree will improve your chances greatly and some people think they can just come over but they have to go back home because of money issues so have money when you come over and you will do fine especially if you have a degree

I've moved around through several countries, and it is that easy, especially if you're young. There's a culture shock, but you settle down and everything's alright. New York is an incredible city, you can move there no problem.

Im in england, and im finishing school soon too, i've been thinking of doing the same thing.. and i think its not that hard, ahha.

id love to join you! ahha
And i love NY too (:
been once

kittenmeru
yup. crazy.
You first would have to look into a job, and once you get that, you can see if you have enough money to rent a cheap apartment, and if it's close enough to your job to take public transit, and the costs of taking public transit along with all your food costs, and everything else. bills, other necessities...
it takes a lot of planning to move that far, because no one you know can help you out in the area. look into it a bit more, then decide.

I wish i were able to do what i wanted to do when i was younger. Go, make sure you save up money to live off of ,rent a room for a while and then find you a better job. Go out to clubs, parties and meet people, make friends and build a new life. and you're the perfect age.
