Am I stupid/nieve to want to leave the midwest to live in Hawaii? |
MY boyfriend is thinking about re-activating and going back into the Navy where he served in Hawaii for 8 1/2 yrs. He is thinking about re-joining and I have my reservations. I know things are expensive, but I do have a BS degree and we would both be working. Does it really suck to live in Hawaii or are my daydreams about it being wonderful, just daydreams? |

Ok about the daydreams thing...i daydream of hawaii all the time. If your bf is thinking of going back in the service and wants to deploy to Hawaii I would take him up on it for a few years and then transfer out if you decide you don't like it. I will say if your going to be in the service that there's not many places better to be placed than Hawaii! Aloha all the way! |

I've heard Hawaii is nice to visit, hell to live. I've visited, and have relatives that live there, they are content, but do enjoy coming to the mainland.
They say you need to really appricaite nature, and the biological side of things to appriciate living in Hawaii. |

I lived in both Hawaii and the midwest..The cost of living is much cheaper in the midwest, but I couldn't stand the cold weather for too long. Both places are beautiful to live. I like the 4 seasons that they have in the midwest, but in Hawaii you don't need a/c or heating. There are pros and cons for both places. If you r boyfriend is in the military he can shop at the commisary where the food is cheaper. He will also get housing allowance to help with rent. Maybe the two of you should take a trip out there and see what you think. It might be a culture shock at first. When I first went to the midwest I had culture shock big time. |

Go for it, you only live once. The Midwest will be there when you get back. |

I left TEXAS at 18 and lived in Hawaii for four wonderful years. Hawaaii is expensive A MYTH you can afford to live there I lived in a tin roofed one room house in Kona but who cares it is paradise be aware reupping in the Navy doesnt mean you will be in hawaii you may go to Fort Worth TEXAS where I live now but if you live modestly anyone can live in Hawaii |

Your daydreams of being wonderful can work out anywhere you decide to move to. Just as long as you stay positive. Don't listen to what anyone thinks or say. Living in Hawaii is NOT for everyone but if you think you will be happy there then go for it! Your life is usually what you make of it, regardless where you live now or where you plan on moving to.
My husband and i lived in Hawaii for about 3 years b/c of my husband being in the Military, to tell you the truth, I didn't really like it there & wasn't use to the lifestyle since I'm from the Mainland but don't let my opinions/experiences discourage you from making a decision. |

LIVE ALOHA!!

No you are not stupid or nieve to want to leave the mainland and live in Hawaii. I born and raised in Hawaii married a Marine lived on base.
Yes it is cheaper on base and a little expensive to live off base, but i've mention this many times to family and friends. Your pay no matter where you work = with the cost of living no matter where you live in the U.S.A.
For ex:
When working in Hawaii getting paid $15.00 an hr taking home about $1,100.00 ok not that much a lil less. To where we live now in the mainland doing the same type job, but earning $8.00 when i first started now $8.75 after 3yrs & taking home $650.
Yes big difft. but for both places we lived at we had enough to pay bills and play $$$.
Does it suck to live in Hawaii? No. It doesnt suck to live anywhere in the U.S.A. It's how YOU make it to be. Make your DAYDREAMS come true & WONDERFUL!! GOOD LUCK!

i lived in hawaii (oahu) for 3 years....the first six months, awesome, then i had to get a job and start living....sucks...super super expensive and each year i stayed, the island seemed to have gotten smaller and smaller. the houses are like huts, unless you want to rent 3000+ dollars a month or buy for millions. and lots of traffic everywhere, locals and tourists. check craigslist.org and click hawaii and check out some places
work wise....real estate or tourism, other than that, economy is really bad and hard to get good paying jobs.
if you absolutely love the beach, move, but dont expect to live a plush lifestyle. if you dont like the beach/ocean, reserve hawaii for a vacation destination, but not home.
i am back on the mainland and love it. i still love hawaii, but only to visit, not to live. |

Aloha Dre

I moved here from California 4 years ago. I am still adjusting!
Ya' definitely feel like you are in the middle of the ocean at times, and at times you are thankful for it, others you're not!
Remember that living on an island is not the same as visiting. Living here is not "life on a beach with a pina-colada". The heat year round gets old too, especially at Christmas :( |

Hawaii is great....I'd definitely chooose to live there rather than the Midwest...though the cost of living is definitely higher, but I think it's worth it. |

NO-you would only be stupid to stay in the midwest vs going to live on a beautiful island! |

ok, one, it's your boyfriend not your husband so there is some risk there. but, if you will be together, you will be with someone who already has a guaranteed job and salary, so you will not have to worry about the expense as much as if you went by yourself. if you were working too,all the better. there is not much reason not to go. it absolutely does not suck to live in hawaii. it is crowded, expensive, and far from everyone back home, but it is a gorgeous and one of a kind experience. |

Oh no like some said, Hawaii is good for vacation but not a place to live! Other than the high living expences, Hawaii is simply a boring little island isolated from outside world. That's why it's a paradise where people come on a vacation and forget about what's going on in the real world. Well you can move to Hawaii and move out anytime, so you can give it a try. |

MELTING POT OF THE PACIFIC. Nicknamed that for a reason. Every Ethnic group and culture you can think of reside here. The Food, is to die for. You name it, we got it. We also got the good, the bad, and the ugly. It's beautiful here and our laid back style of living is something we take for granted. Our traffic can get ugly during rush hour but you find ways to work around it. There really is no need to throw yourself in the middle of it unless you like waiting in traffic. We also got our really good people and a few not so good people. That is no different than anywhere else in the world you live. Honey, if you are going to be here for a few years then I say do it. Heck, it will be a great experience for you, you will love the beaches and the picnics and the hiking and the people watching. We have great night life and wonderful friendly people who live here. But, of course, like anywhere else, there is always a few you would like to avoid. But, meet the locals, you will find they can be great friends and will watch your back at all times. I say don't cheat yourself out of an experience you will treasure for a life time. |

Oh My God! I love Hawaii!!! I'll go, if you don't want to! LOL
Are you certain that he will get stationed in Hawaii again?? This is the "premiere" site for the navy, so he may not get it again!
No, you are not stupid....but then again, I just love Hawaii for the weather. I, however, have traveled to 30 out of the 50 states (so far), and I can say for certain that there is something to be said about "midwestern values." The people in the midwest are friendlier. We are known to be hard working, honest "folks". In my travels, I have not found that true anywhere else! |

Hawaii does not suck as a place to live. Yes there are flaws; it being expensive is one of them. There are flaws with anywhere you live. But if you are apart of the Military then you probably get to live on base which can be cheaper. Shopping is also cheaper on Base. |
