Americans: Everywhere I go American say they are proud to be American. Why are you proud to be American?

No one says why, but most people say it's because Americans have access to the best educational, medical, professional, social opportunities Access means you have the availability to, but not necessarily the use of, those things, and in many cases that means enough money or connections to access. Other countries have the same opportunities, too. Even so , they are not good reasons to be proud to be an American.

Except for the invention of the bacon cheeseburger, the reasons all of you have provided have given me a good sense of why you are proud to be an American.

To all_hail_the_queen: Your interpretation of my question only proved your bias and your prejudice. . I am not a hater. More than half of my family lives in the US and I visit them as frequently as I can. I love Boston and New York City, but I am very happy where I live. Just like my American cousins and many other Americans I've met, you were unable to answer my question with satisfaction, hence the report of abuse.

well i'm proud for a whole bunch of reasons.

i'm proud that every day our citizens go to other countries to defend freedoms.

i'm proud that we were the youngest nation to ever become a super power.

i'm proud that you can be born in the slums but go on to be something great like a doctor, inventor, actor, etc!

i'm proud that even though our president is sometimes an idiot, we still have freedoms, he's not a dictator, he cannot control everything.

i'm proud that i was born here and given the opportunity for greatness!

Pride is the result of accomplishments.
Everyone has the opportunity to succeed , and anything that I have has been earned by me or my wife.
Nothing is just given out , that would produce shame.

I could go on forever about why I feel proud to be an American. To put it simply, I feel we have the best country in the world. We are free. We fight for what we feel is right. We don't get stomped on. We are mighty. And we help other countries till it hurts. Yeah, I'm PROUD to be an American!

In America it is possible to be happy working at a fast food restaurant just as well as it is to be an artist, or a lawyer. In America it is about what YOU want out of your life. If I'm happy working somewhere that pays me $6 dollars an hour, that's ok. If I work all the time and make $400,000 a year and have no family and little friends but I'm happy, that's also ok.

In America you are free to explore your sexuality and religion. In America I really believe you can become anything you want, but it will be hard.

We used to be ruled by a king in England and wanted the people to have a say in their government (representation) so we left and came to America. We all have the right to vote unless we do something to jepordize that right.

I hear negative things about Americans a lot and that is fine. I don't care what people from other countries think about us, were dumb, fat, ugly, whatever. I'm happy being an American. I love to travel and one day I'd like to see many countries and learn many languages but I'm happy and proud to be born red, white and blue. In fact I'm going into the military to even more defend our great country.

The reason I am proud to be an American is because I know that our country fought, lost, and won. We have so much freedom and we are lucky to be in such an amazing country with such good health care, education, and the things you mentioned above. It sometimes is a matter of opinion. Most countries don't have as fortunate healthcare, education, etc. They also don't have as much freedom. I hope this helps! ;]

I am proud of my American Heritage and proud to be an American for that reason.

I am proud to be apart of the oldest democracy on the planet.

Our Fore Fathers were the bravest and most inventive men in history. To stand up against a unfair ruler King George that taxed this land without our say government . To build a militia that was small in size but great in heart and fight off the control and to develop an unprecedented Constitution. This plan gives the government to its people for their say and single vote for what majority feels is necessary for the country. From this we have built a strong country that has stood out globally for over 200 yrs.

We are given freedoms to say what we feel, live where we want, protect ourselves from personal attack, and to demonstrate are disagreements.

We have aided in the protection of freedom overseas. Fought and died to keep peace and to take down tirants that would have infested the world.

I am a proud Constitutionalists, although I feel we have steered away from the foundation of what the Constitution was written for, I still say that there is no other better place to live and grow without limitations.

" I am proud to be an American because atleast I know Im free and I wont forget the men who died to give that right to me. And I'll gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today!"

Your arguments are quite valid and there are other reasons to be ashamed of America (I'll just say "Bush" and leave it at that), BUT the thing that makes me MOST proud to be an American is that America was the first country in the world every founded NOT on a common language, religion or race. Instead, it was founded on a creed "that all men are created equal."

This is an amazing thing. There have been many copies but there's only one original Coke - er, I mean USA.

: )

I am me and no one else
I am proud of this country, because even though we disagree quiet often on things, we still try to fight for our freedoms and our individuality and that is something we are in unity about. I am proud because even though life is a struggle and being able to "make it" in this country is hard... it is still attainable. Individuals here in this country may be prejudice about one thing or another but we are still very welcoming as a whole.

I am proud because working hard can get you somewhere, as can knocking on doors. America is the second chance for a lot of people. A way to live and make a whole new life, whether you are an American native (or Native American) or if you are an immigrant coming here to get away from the persecution and poverty of your home country.

I am proud because I see people like my father and dad, and my grandfathers and my good friends sacrifice their life (whether it is just their actual life or if it's their being) for our people to have the freedom to curse them or just freedom in general. I am proud because this country has given a voice to all people of all backgrounds, whether or not other groups of people agree with them or like them.

We may be the worlds teenager but there will come a day again when the world looks to us for help and for hope, like so many still do today.

I am proud to be an American because I have the freedom to live my life the way I deem fit and necessary. And I know this country isn't perfect, but it's my country and I will die for her and what she represents, if needed...

ADD: and Pixie I have lived in Europe and though thoughts have changed since then, Europeans that I came across were pretty eager to "be" american. And yes the thought that "everything revolves around us" is a bit narcessistic, it is quiet true at times. I am sure that thought is deminishing though.

We invented the bacon cheeseburger. Case closed.

its just our quote, its part of our counties song so everyone says it. aren't you proud to be in ur county? and we feel lucky because we are a free county, we have freedom of speech. to vote, to dress how we want when we want where we want. we have benefits allot of other countries dont have. sure other counties have those rights too but we have alot more. people learn what goes on it other countries and they become thankful for the way we live.

Right now, America is the most powerful country in the world. Everything revolves around us. We are the ones who essentialy make the decisions. Generally, we have got the best of everything, even though you will find other countries who have are better in certain things, as a whole America's got it all. America is the country everybody wants to visit and many people dream to live here and be American Citizens.

i am not necessarily proud to be an american, i think the people that say that are mostly ignorant, i, however, acknowledge that other countries are just as advanced, and possibly better...i am also disgusted by my countries poor leadership, and the inability of the vast majority of my fellow citizens to see that the playing field is being leveled, and the US better look out...america is a great country, dont get me wrong, but many people fail to see past the facade and see what the country is really about, i love america, however i do not go around saying "im proud to be am american" i dont have that kind of false superiority complex

Because America is the best country in the world!! Everyone knows that! If it wasnt the best then why is it becoming overridden by immigrants? How many countries other than America has more immigrants than citizens? Not any that I can think of. America is the land of opportunity for us and unfortuately everyone else, and we pay (the citizens) for everyone who wants to come here and rape our society. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal, huh?

"Everything revolves around us"

This is why most of the world hates you. NO, everything does NOT revolve around you!!!!! Visit Europe and you will discover that nobody could care less about America, we could cope fine on our own thank you very much.

"We are the ones who essentialy make the decisions"

By stomping your feet around and bullying other countries. When will you get the idea out of your heads that you are some kind of World Police, far superior to any other country?

Edit: Katie - whilst many aspects of American culture have entered Europe, such as clothes, TV programmes, food etc - most people in Europe have a strong cultural identity and would never want to move to the US.

Because Americans have this skewed way of thinking that if we all join together and are proud of where we live and what we stand for, we'll have some false sense of unity that the rest of the world will be intimidated by. I'd much rather live in Europe.
