It really is going to depend on where you are working and how far you want to drive. It is true the SW side of town(Galleria, Post Oak, Sharpstown areas) has a very high crime rate and gang problems, but there are a few good neighborhoods although they are high dollar. The south side of town around the medical center and Reliant stadium have some reasonable apartments but traffic is a problem. You can go further south to the Pearland area (20-30 minutes from downtown) and find very reasonable apartment and home prices, building 2 major shopping malls, but no public transportation. The Southeast side you will need to go to the Clear Lake/Friendswood area. Good shopping and plenty of reasonable housing, and there are park and rides into downtown. Stay completely away from the east side, Pasadena, Baytown, Gelena Park. As far as the north side of town, I can't advise. Have heard not to good though unless you go to Spring, Katy, or the Woodlands. I've lived on each side of town except the north in good and bad neighborhoods. If I had to pick I would say live in the Pearland/Friendswood/ClearLake areas. All areas are diverse, have great shopping, dining areas and plenty of safe parks.

Kingwood is a nice part of town. If you're looking for cheap, look into the neighborhoods of Sheerwood Trails and Forest Cove.

I was born and raised in Houston, and still here. i would recommend that you not come to Houston. It SUCKS, but if you have to move here, don't get a place in the SW side. Zip codes such as 77074, 77096, 77036, 77035, more in the SW are terrible.
Gangs are a big problem in SW Houston. I'm trying to move but I just bought a home in SW a few years ago. I didn't realize how bad the area was becoming.
I would say to avoid SW all together. Northeast is probably not any better, but I don't know much about that area.
Perhaps you can look up Houston police website and pull a crime report for the zip code area to get further info.
I think some good cheaper areas may be Westheimer / Sam Houston Tollway, Northwest area near TC Jester / 290. or even far north like Spring, Tomball, or Conroe (but apts. may be higher)
Houston inner city is just so crowded with a lot of construction.
I hate it here in Houston, so maybe I am not the best to ask, because I would not suggest coming to this hot, crowded, boring, high crime rate city!

Spring is a really great area. Used to live there...schools were wonderful. If you worked downtown, it would take about an hour to get to work...but you could take the toll road. Alot depends on where you work and how much you want to drive. 1960 area and north (straight north, northwest, or northeast) are all good areas.

The area codes for Houston are 713, 281, and 832. I suggest moving to the Sugarland area because it was rated the 3rd best city to live in according to the CNN Money magazine. There is plenty to do there. You can do to Sugarland Town Sqare where you can enjoy the nightlife. Go to First Colony Mall and shop. the list goes on while your in Sugarland.

I do live 3hrs away from Houston and I surely do not know what "onfo' is.
Humble, where BUSH airport is located looks pretty good storewise. Katy and Richmond are not to far away!

I could give you some info but you're looking for onfo, can't help you with that.

the west side is a lot more nicer than the east side, the galleria area has lots of upscale shopping, but i would suggest the rice village area is a great place to go to because there are lots of cool shops, nightlife, and home to dozens of ethnic restaurants

Im from Corpus Christi, so I can't really help you. Hope you find what your looking for. If you ever move to Corpus let me know, be glad to help. :)

I think you got some really good answers on the out skits of Houston. Kingwood,Humble,Woodlands,Conroe,Spring,... Crosby, Mount Belvue, These are all good places and accessable to Houston, all tho it does depend on where your work is, to deside whats works best for you. Good luck on your quest.

You need to live close to work because commuting across Houston is awful. And, honestly, awful doesn't begin to describe it.

I live in Northwest Houston, and love it here. The crime is not bad, and everything seems to be moving out this way...shopping, restaurants, theatres. It rocks! Check out all of the new neighborhoods between Highway 6 and Fry Road (north of 1-10).

BTW someone else said to avoid North Houston because it's trashy, but I have to totally disagree. SW Houston is trashy and gang ridden. Stick to NW Houston, or West Houston, OUTSIDE of both the loop and Beltway 8 and you'll be fine.

The outer areas of Houston would be the best. Houston is big... down I 45 South toward Galveston on the Nasa side is a good area. So is Katy, that is on I-10 going West and then I 45 North toward Spring and the Woodlands. All nice suburbs and good areas. Stay away from the San Jacinto area. The downtown area is ok, but that is businesses... I wouldn't live down town. The area around the Galleria is upscale. Good luck. Stay on the outskirts

i have some relatives in humble (on the north side by the airport) and it's pretty nice around there.
