Anybody else find the New York accent annoying?

I love New York (nearly everything about it). Lived there for 6 years.

But I just can't stand their accents. People think I'm weird for preferring the Southern accents than the NY one. Really, believe it or not, the Southern accent doesn't annoy me. The LA accent is slightly annoying, but it's tolerable, though. The Boston accent is hilarious, but I still like it.

Funny thing, they sound like gangsters.

You sound so ignorant.

I think the Southern accent is annoying.

I am from the midwest and when I first moved to NY I was not offput by the accent. And even after leaving NY I don't feel that way.

NY is a amazing city and I am going back ASAP. I don't really like Southern English either of the African American Variety or the Caucasian one.

It isn't even proper English.

It's not annoying- It's what makes new york new york! I have a brooklyn accent and it doesn't bother anyone because we all have it.

Okay, how are you going to come in NY's travel section and state how much you hate the NY accent? You do sound very ignorant because, for one, there is not just one NY accent. If you lived there for 6 years, then you should know that New York is a very diverse city and its boroughs are often like separate countries as far as dialect goes. I won't sit here and list the backgrounds of all of New York's denizens, because again, you should know since you lived there for a while. I am quite sure that New Yorkers are just as annoyed with other regions' accents as you are with theirs. I happen to find it intriguing that I can go to different parts of my own country and be surrounded by so many different cultures, languages, and sounds.

Trotsky is my Homeboy!
I agree with the person who asked which accent. You can hear 10 different accents in as many blocks.

I agree that the Fran Dresher-Queens accent is pretty god-awful, as is Rosie Perez's (I usually like Puerto Rican accents....hers really bother me, though!).

I really like the old "Dead End Kids" accent, but, alas, that accent has vanished....now you can only hear it in old movies....

There's no such thing as a New York accent. Other places have accents. Like the south midwest and california. New Yorkers do not have accents.

lalapunk
Angelenos don't have a real accent, but they used to have a dialect called Valspeak, named after the San Fernando Valley from where it's originated, it's like TOTALLY!!!
