I'm going to move to central Texas with my bf within the year. I'm from the California Bay Area and weather there was pretty uneventful. I know weather in Texas can get pretty crazy, so I want to know what to expect :) |

I live in Austin and we have have extreme weather, but most of the time it is pretty mild and predictable.
Winter
- Temps average in the 50s or 60s during the day and 40s at night
- Usually only need a light jacket or sweater
- Often rains (it is our rainy season)
- Get occasional 'ice storms' (1 or 2 a year, these are cold snaps mixed with rain, where the frozen rain coats everything). Rarely, it snows (3 times in 16 years).
Spring
- 70 to 80 degrees, cool evenings
- Often humid
- Beautify weather that seems to last forever
Summer
- Hot, 100 during the day, 80 at night (this year has been cooler than normal). Highs can get up into the 110 or more in hotter summers.
- Humid, but not as bad as the coastal regions
- Very little rain
Fall
- Like the Spring, the summer heat breaks and we have several months of 80-90 degree weather and little rain. Wonderful.
The most severe weather we get is:
- Ice storms
- Wind storms (we get several a year with enough force to knock over older fences)
- Summer hear (can get over 110)
- High humidity
- Tornadoes, but they are rare |

Moving from the SF Bay area, you'll probably find central Texas hot and humid from April through September (maybe 40% humidity and 90-100 degrees). October through March, it's pretty mild. We do get two or three serious rainstorms a year (where it rains for several days in a row), often accompanied by sporadic roadway flooding. These rain events usually happen in early summer and late fall. The temperature drops close to freezing maybe 15 days out of the year, but it's unusual for use to get snow or ice. If we do get ice, it's gone within a couple of days. Tornado season is in the spring (March-ish).
In Texas, weather always seems to be the top story on the news! |

The weather is actually fairly mild here, except for those areas & times of something severe, like a tornado. But, my dad's house in NJ was damaged by a tornado. At least here, all one has to do is weather the summer to enjoy 3 nice seasons. Besides, summer is what all those lakes are for!

Helpful & fun Texas sites below, some of the places are a ways from Dallas, like Galveston at 300 miles, but due to open highways that's only 5-6 hours, most folks think nothing of making a run like that for a 3 or 4 day weekend. Email me any questions:

Hot in the summer but not uncomfortable because humidty is usually pretty low. Spring and fall great weather for the most part. But we do have thunderstorms and an occasional tornado from time to time. Weather cold but not super cold. Good and brisk. Very seldom have to wear more than a coat.
Being on the edge of the plains it does get a little windy at times.
Actually being on the edge of the western plains get the best of both worlds. Get the eastern rains, and get the dry clean air of the western plains. |

Avoid the coast. It has got too crowded to safely evacuate in the event of hurricanes, and the state will not build routes inland; instead new highways are always built from the mid coast leading right into Houston, which is barely fifty miles inland itself. It gets hot and sweltering on the coast too. I should know, I'm from 55 miles sse of Houston, and just 8 miles from the beach.
The ideal place to me would be Hopkins County, midway between Dallas and Texarkana. Nice weather, beautiful country. You are talking about probably the Temple area (hot and dry in the summer, but stable weather, possible tornados occassionally). Probably Columbus, Texas, would be near enough there but with probably a much better economy and not as dry in summer. |

i'm from south texas...around the Laredo area...it gets pretty hot here...and it has rain quite a bit due to those hurricanes...but other than that, we don't get hit like the upper part of texas when there are hurricanes around...its just hot...95-105f during the day night time it falls to 75 at least |

humid in June july and aug, uneventful the rest of the time. If we go below freezing after a rain, it pretty much sucks and everyone will shut down because we don't know how to drive on ice.
Some years you won't get an "ice storm" as we call it. That is really the only eventful weather.
This summer has felt like a cancoon summer so far. wet, but not overly hot. I'm from Austin all of my life, I don't mind if you want to email a question.
add: people from Florida say humidity is low. people from here call this humid and people from Arizona call it very humid. |

There is no way to describe Texas weather other than, its crazy.
I have lived in Austin, Texas for 21 (going on 22) years and i have seen everything from sunny days with rain - to - rainy days with no clouds.... i know, its weird. I have never seen a tornado or a hurricane in Austin, but it has snowed only twice since 1985, as far i know. Its gotten icy some winters, but mainly its unpredictable weather most of the year. about 65% of the year is sunny weather.
The city of Austin, has many great landmarks, and awesome vistas. not to mention you can even see a ghetto on just about every side of Austin. Not to many in the West. |
