Are Hawaiian locals unfriendly to people that didn't gorwn up there? |
I'm moving to to Hawaii, not sure which city yet. But a few people have told me that if you're from another area, like I'm form St. Louis that a lot of the locals are pretty mean. I've never heard of it until recently so I just wanted to see if anyone might know.
And I am moving there permanently not an extended vacation or anything |

I'm sorry, but I am getting soooo tired of this question & variants of it. Must come up three to four times a month, at least. The short answer is no. The longer answer is what goes around, comes around. As many others have said, if you treat others with kindness & respect, for the most part, it will be reciprocated. There is a small minority that holds bitterness towards haoles for a variety of historical reasons. They are generally pretty easy to avoid. |

We have good people and bad people but overall the people are very friendly as long as you show them respect. It's all about respect and living with Aloha. |

People are really friendly on the east shore around kailua, lanikai and kaneohe or on the south shore like kaimuki. The west shore isn't so pleasant. It is mostly full hawaiians that dont like white people.so to answer you question some are and some aren't. Happy Moving!!! :) |

If you're nice to us, we'll be nice to you. I've had a few instances where haoles (Caucasians) weren't too nice to me, so I was like, "Oh, forget it." But does that mean I HATE haoles? No. You're gonna find some mean people in every group. That's unavoidable. But you'll be fine.
Remember, haoles are not the majority here like on the mainland. |

30-40 years ago it was really bad. I know 2 friends and 2 cousins who said it was pretty rough.
One of my friends had to be taken out of public school because the Hawaiian kids kept beating him up for answering the teacher's questions in class.
Maybe things are better now. |

The truth is, we don't like tourist & haole (white people) but if your going to live in Hawaii, you will get used to it. We are friendly if you are friendly, just make sure you respect our islands & our culture & you will be fine. |

no actually you'll be surprised, i moved from italy to hawaii a few months ago and they were very friendly i feel part of the family here now, i hope you'll enjoy hawaii :) |

Local Haole
|
Boomer gal said it best. i might add, i. there's a bad mango in every tree. use your common sense, I like most haoles, but enuff already. to crowded and you take our jobs like the illegal aliens do.Wait til one leaves before another comes in, the haole keeps coming and tries to change things like they were in St. Louis or wherever they're from, that ain't gonna cut it. just respect the culture and the land as well as the people and use your common sense. ask if you're not sure. |

The "Locals" are not nice to morons, straight up! Im "Haole" (white) from CAL. My husband is born and raised here in Hawaii. He is 1/2 Hawaiian. Ive never had a problem with people not liking me, because i dont have an attitude problem like a lot of other cocky people do that come here! Its all in how you act. Sometimes people are nice, and sometimes they arent. Plain and simple. IF you're nice and have a good attitude, than you wont have a problem finding friends. I have a friend that moved here from Oahu, to KAuai where I live. Kauai has a different mix of people. Its a much smaller island. So people are a lot closer. ITs like a LARGE Small town, sort of. Just feel it out. Dont try to stab anyone in the back to get yourself ahead. PEople here dont like that at all. And it ends up biting you in the ***!
Good luck! |

We're not mean. Some are though! But most likely they'll be your friend. Don't let anyone scare you on here. Make sure to meet new people here, and don't embarrass yourself. If you have one friend here in Hawaii, you're bound to have 5 million more to come - because it's easy to meet people here, and keep their friendship. I only would not suggest backstabbing them, because when you mess with a local - they get nuts! I think it's retarded, but it is what it is. Make sure you get a job, it's expensive here!! Have in Hawaii. One day you should come visit my church (: http://www.therockkailua.com/ |

Hawaii is one of most culturally diverse place in America. We have several cultures here. Hawaiians being the most obvious. We also have a diverse Asian population; Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese (sp?). All these culture differ. And it is best if you learn the differences.
Due to Hawaii's history there is some racism against Whites. Some can't take this. I am not implying that the Racism is right because it is not. I am half White so the racism is aimed against me. Some will tell that you can't get jobs if you are White, however this is untrue my father is White and he never had trouble getting a job. You my experience racism however you cannot let the experience color your views.
Since we have many different cultures in Hawaii there are many set of "rules" all of them slightly different. Make an effort to learn. When you make an effort to learn the the differences then you will be accepted.
Not everybody who lives in Hawaii is Hawaiian. To be Hawaiian to must have Hawaiian blood. Or be of Hawaiian ancestry. If you are like me and have lived in Hawaii all their life but have no Hawaiian blood you are considered a Local.
We also have a dialect of Pidgin Creole English. Or it is called Pidgin for short. This language was created during the plantation days. We had workers from all over Asia and the Pacific they all spoke different languages and the needed a way to communicate. So a new language grew and was created. There a some who hear Pidgin an the equate it with lack of intelligence. Do not do this! |

The only city I know of in Hawaii is Honolulu..
The rest are towns.
Like many have said, it usually goes, if you're nice, we're nice. Not everybody here is Hawaiian though, we are locals, sure, but not Hawaiian. Considering Hawaiian is an ethnicity. There are a few unfriendly places but the majority, like said is, if you're nice, so are we. |

there r some towns that have signs that says white people are not welcome...but most towns don't have a problem. |
