I work in downtown dc a block from the white house. this is a busy city. people are typically in a hurry and in thier own world. you wont see people going out of thier way to help others. this could be perceived as rude if you are used to southern hospitality. the subway system here is great, but again, no friendly conversations will be struck up. if people arent flipping through thier blackberry, they are listening to thier Ipod or reading. Mike B is right. If you are on on the metro escalator, left side moves and right side stands.
Once you get out of downtown you might find a different breed of older/ friendlier residents mixed in with the riff-raff.
DC is a great place, though. the pace is fast so get ready!! |

As with every city in the world, there are chances that some of the people that you meet in Washington D.C. could very well be rude, but you have more of a chance to find people who are nice and polite than you do downright rude.
In short, even if you are moving to Washington D.C. you should have nothing to worry about in having lots of rude people there.
Hope this helps :) |

I do think that native Washingtonians are generally nice, but it's hard to generalize the people in Washington; very few of the people you'll probably encounter in D.C. are actually from here. You may experience people who are rude, but that doesn't mean they're Washingtonians; chances are they're just transplants from somewhere else in the country who will be gone in a few years. |

I used to live on the Virginia side of the metro Washington area. No, they are not rude...just there are A LOT of people. If you are coming from a small town in LA, be prepared for culture shock! |

I have lived all over the US and a lot of different countries. Most people in DC are very intelligent and very friendly. The only time I heard anything kind of rude was on escalators--stand on the right walk on the left-- a big no no in DC. if you stand on the left. |

No.
Sometimes people are - as sometimes people are everywhere. Note the related question on metro-riding tourists, where all the issues that commuters feel in relation to tourist are detailed. While I don't agree with that person, it can be very frustrating to miss your train because a tourist family was blocking the escalator (generally we stand on the right and walk on the left).
But the range goes from that person to me; I do a tourism podcast, and when in town go out of my way to help tourists find their way around. Since I am often in town, riding the metro on Saturday and Sunday, I run into a lot of people. So we can be very nice and warm.
DC is at its heart a southern city - and a lot of that southern hospitality that you know very well remains here. I think you will be happy. |

I've been to D.C., 7 times and the only rude person I encountered was a homeless man, who asked for money to buy food, but refused a perfectly good lunch I had just purchased from the Roy Rogers, on my way to Union Station. |

No way! They're so nice. My grade went there for our class trip this year and they were great. They helped us find the Holocaust Museum and they even made a few cars stop so we could cross the street. They're great! |

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Washington DC/Baltimore/Philadelphia. I have to say that the general public in all those places were wonderful. They answered our questions...in Washington DC they gave us directions or we would still be going in circles and into tunnels...Baltimore we met the most wonderful group of young ladies and gentlemen at Bo Brooks Crab Shack...they were so informative and just so much fun to talk to...would have loved to spend more time with them. We went to the Washington Nationals game and the people there were absolutely the most BLAH people. Not one person turned around or leaned over or said one word to us...coming from Phoenix, where if you wear someone else's colors into the stadium they are going to chatter at you, it was odd. Now in Philly...the city of brotherly love, that was so true. Everyone there was so nice, and at the ballpark the ticket takers teased us but were so excited we were there, the people with season tickets groaned when our team was doing well, and they were so genuinely interested in us...so I think the Washington DC people downtown are used to tourists and are happy to help them out, but on social hour...not so much! |

Especially those politicians
I watch on CSPAN and other
programs. They are incompetent
and a bit arrogant, in general.
Most are fueled by money or
malignant narcissism. Power
tripping aristocrats. |
