There are 50 states. However, in Congress (House of Representitives), there are couple of non voting representivites from US territories such as Puerto Rico and Guam.

There are 50 states, but many times Puerto Rico is given almost even status and the District of Columbia is often treated as equal to a state although it is really just an autonomous city.

while the district of Columbia is INSIDE the united states it can not be part of any one state because that may give the state the unfair advantage

50 stars=50 states. granted America owns some property outside of the country but those do not count as states.

50 states officially but then we have the territories of guam and puerto rico and also the district of columbia (washington, DC) which is sometimes confused as a state.
