There are small towns like that all over the US. North, South, East & West.
There are big cities everybody has heard of becuz they're so densely populated (NYC, LA, Miami, etc), but countless ones dotted all through the land. Some of them are so small they don't even have a traffic light and everyone knows everyone else.
You can find a small town like that on the Atlantic Coast. If you preferred cooler weather, you'd choose a northern state. The farther south you go, the warmer it would be & also the more humid.
Plenty of small locales on the Gulf Coast, too.
If your preference is specifically the Pacific Coast, you've got from Northern Washington on down to Southern California from which to choose. If you definitely want California, it's a very large state so there are plenty of small towns. Since CA runs so far north, you have a wide range of weather available. There are mountains, valleys, canyons, wine country...
When you look on a map the smallest cities are in the smallest print. If you find one in a location that suits you, then do further research on that town. You can actually live in a small town that is not very far from the amenities of the big city. The cost of living is higher in CA & the closer you get to the coast it's higher still. Coastal living no matter whether Atlantic, Gulf or Pacific is expensive. You can live 30 mins to an hour inland to cut down on living expenses & still make frequent trips to the beach. |

yes, millions
but CA isn't the place to find most of them... they are more prevelent in the midwest... technically, populations can be soooo low they do not qualify as a city or a town- they are called villages (look up in wiki) |

Good luck with California.
The smallest one that I can think of is Parkfield, CA and that's 2 hours away from the Pacific Ocean.
Try looking at Oregon or Washington. |

I don't know about CA, but there's a town called Stem in NC and there's less than 400 people there.
Heaven forbid you go to Shoofly. it's worse... Like, you're driving and if you blink then you'll pass right through the start and end of Shoofly. |
