There is great train service to San Diego and it is a very interesting trip.

Take the greyhound.

Amtrak goes there. However, getting around SanDiego will be hard without a car. You really can't get anywhere without a car in Socal. An investment in a rental will be worth it, since you will be able to see more and have more time to see it.

The trains are very convenient. Amtrak goes from L.A. to downtown San Diego. The Metrolink (local L.A. train system) goes as far south as Oceanside, which is the northernmost coastal town in San Diego. From there you can take the Coaster (local SD train) to downtown. We don't have as much public transit around the county in San Diego, but you should be able to get to the city, Sea World, the Zoo and so Balboa Park, Coronado, etc. with trains, trolleys and buses. Welcome and enjoy!

The best way would be to take a train from Union Station in LA to Downtown San Diego. Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Route is the one that goes from LA to San Diego.

As an alternative you can take the Commuter Trains. This would be the Metrolink Orange County Line from Union Station in LA to Oceanside, then in Oceanside transfer to the Coaster which will take you to Downtown. These are a few dollars cheaper than Amtrak but don't run as often.

Once in Downtown, it depends on where you want to go. You can take the Trolley to several places. There is also a tour called the Old Town Trolley Tours which go to several Spots and you can get on/off to sightsee then pick up another one later on in the day.

Also, just right across the street from the San Diego Station is the Harbor Tours. You can take a tour of the Harbor or catch a Ferry over to Coronado.

Train or Bus

Amtrak is your best bet. Short of that, Greyhound bus.

Your best bet will be the train. It will take a few hours. The San Diego station is right downtown- close to many attractions.

Take the train and catch a bus in San Diego to where you want to go. Or take a cab depending on your budget. The train ride is great. And San Diego has a good bus system.

Hello and welcome. Even though Amtrak is a pain sometimes the trip from LA to SD is very nice, much better than a bus.

Once you get to San Diego you'll be right downtown, unlike the LA end of the route. We have busses and trolleys but if you really want to get around it's worth it to rent a car. If you have time the drive east into the mountains and the town of Julian is spectacular.

Whatever you do, enjoy!

You can take the train (Amtrack) or perhaps a bus (greyhound).

There is a train.... It's called "The Coaster" or something like that... goes between the two cities, pretty fast, people use it to go between for work...
Plus a few other trains, call amtrak, they will tell you what is up, there are also plenty of busses.

It is pretty cheap, plus there are jumper flights between los angeles and san diego that cost like 100 bucks (OR LESS, and PROBABLY LESS), and is like a 45 min flight... Search on www.priceline.com, you can choose your own price, and probably get a pretty cheap flight.

Once you get there, there is a great trolley system set up to get you around the city and to the beaches, and it is pretty cheap too... Both San Diego, and LA have great public transit systems set up.

We are from australia and have been to Los angeles and San Diego for the last 2 years .We catch the amtrak train From Union Station in Los Angeles. You can easily get to union station by subway or bus from LAX.The amtrak train goes right into San Diego to Santa Fe Depot. We found it really easy to get around San Diego by using the trolley It's very cheap so buy a day pass. We went toTijuana border and walked to Las Americas outlet shops.Great shopping very cheap.Train costs about $26 per person one way.Great views along the way.You can easily get a bus to zoo and seaworld in san diego. There is a tourist information office next to Santa Fe Depot that are really helpful and tell you how to get to all the tourist spots. We stayed at Pacific Inn and Suites and booked over the internet.Cost $59a night. It's not very fancy but was really handy and we could walk there from train station.Have fun We can't wait to come back in 2007

Fly Amtrack - the Coaster runs along the coast and its actually a very nice ride. It'll dump you right downtown, a short walk to the gaslamp, little italy, all kinds of good stuff.
