America is a big place remember, the US mainland spans 4 time-zones. So there are different things to do depending on what region of the country that you are in.

If you are into the big city life, New York City has a lot to offer in the bereau of Manhatten known for it's shopping, Broadway Theater, the Empire State Building. There's also the statue of liberty on Ellis Island where thousands of immigrants came into this country. Plus all of the restaraunts.

Conseqeuntly though, with NY being a huge tourist destination, it's also one of the most expensive places to visit considering the high price of downtown hotels. I would also imagine though I can't say through experience that NYC can get pretty humid during the summer time given all of it's concrete and tall buildings culminating in a heat island effect as what tends to happen in a lot of American cities during the summer time.

If history is your thing, then Washington DC, Maryland, and Pennslyvania offer a lot to the history buff. There where quite a few battles fought in this portion of the country that shaped it's history, the national anthem was written at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, and of course DC is the nation's capitol.

If you like nature and hiking, Colorado is known for it's Rocky Mountains, the talest in the US mainland.

If them parkes are your thing then Disney World, Universal Studios and Epcott Center in Orlando, Florida is a worthy trip in itself, so long as the high humidity in Florida doesn't bother you. From my experience those places offer something for people of all ages and interests. Florida is also known of course for it's beaches, it's a vacation hub for thousands of Americans.

All in all every region of this country has something to offer depending on what you are looking for. I would say you and your family should consider what kinds of things they would like to do here, then go and research to see what kind of places best suite your interests.

You can also research places and see what appeals to you, for example you may be interested in what a rodeo is, and what Texas is like. Maybe someone is curious about American baseball, and would be interested in taking in one of the countries more highly regarded baseball stadiums like Wrigley Feild in Chicago, Fenway Park in Boston, or Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore for example.

At any rate, Most Americans themselves haven't had the time or the means to take in all 50 states, so I don't think there is really any one person that can give you a "best place." Bear in mind also that some people tend to be partial to where they live.

Check out the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Gatlinburg TN Area. There are tons of things to see and do. There are over 800 miles of nature trails in the national park for your enjoyment. Gatlinburg is less than a day's drive from 3/4 of the population of the US. The National park is the most visited park in the U.S.
If you are looking for cabin rentals in the area, check out OutbackRentals.com

My house. Just kidding. I wouldn't go to New York if I was on vacation. It would help to know where you are coming from. I like Tennessee.

Hawaii. It's soo beautiful out there. The people are beautiful. The ocean is clear and wavy. The temp. is nice. I swear, it's the most serene place that I've ever been. The sands are white. There's so much to do there. I went to a magic show, watched a movie out on the streeets. You can go swimming anytime. Although the beach gets really dark at nite. But everybody's really coool down there. They have performers on the streets. There's always something to do in Hawii.

South Florida would be great. Around Orlando, Tampa, Miami. There is a lot of things to do like theme parks in Orlando and Tampa, and beaches in Miami, Daytona, Panama City and my favorite Cape San Blas. There are many more attractions too, you can go to www.myflorida.com, and click on visitor in left hand corner. Check it out.
