First of all.... HOWDY!

Several people have suggested the Village. I have to concur, even though I don't like big complexes. Lincoln takes very good care of these properties, they are VERY close to DART rail and bus stops... and very central geographically.

They also do short 7 month leases if you prefer, so you can start there and get a feel for Dallas and exactly what area would be best for you.

What I love about Dallas is that there are a lot of neighborhoods - each with their own feel.

Someone said a**holes live in Highland Park. I went to SMU and lived in Highland Park for 6 years (for college and work thereafter). Very nice area, but expensive. Good if you are at SMU or a family. Otherwise you might check uptown area - would not recommend downtown or Deel Ellum at all unless you are into that "scene" Drugs, homeless people, different lifestyly people

If you are single and want to be around other singles, as someone suggested go to The Village (Lincoln property company). It's literally a village...tons of apartment complexes with its own country club, fitness center, outdoor pool and a park where you can play soccer/football and a nice running trail where lots of people run/walk/walk their dogs. It's the place most people move to after college before they start to settle down. You'll meet a ton of people there. The prices range depending on each individual complex...the newer places will be more expensive but nicer and of course if you are on a tight budget the older complexes would be an option. Note that you can always work a deal with the leasing agent on free rent, cheaper rent price, etc. I know in other cities that's unheard of but they always have specials and you can always negociate so work it!

Uptown is even better (only a few miles south of The Village) but you'll pay more because, well, it's Uptown. I used to live at the Camden Farmer's Market downtown and absolutely loved it but the crime is getting worse there I think so I'd stay a little farther north. You'll have better DART access around Uptown, Downtown and the Village.

Many people have suggested North Dallas. I've lived here all my life, all over Dallas and personally North Dallas has no culture. It's nice because it's newer but everything looks the same...malls, chain restaurants and shopping centers. Cookie-cutter. It's all families and soccer moms. Not that that's bad, but if you're single you wouldn't enjoy living there as much.

Also, traffic is MUCH worse in North Dallas, especially on the weekends. I noticed a huge difference when I moved downtown. I could actually get somewhere in 5 minutes.

Not sure where you are moving from but if you are used to a great public transit system like New York you will have to get used to the fact that everyone drives here...not many people use the DART. It's nowhere near as convenient as the NYC subway system but if you choose not to drive you'll be okay. Texans just love their cars. :-)

Valley Ranch - North Irving - check it out. Valley Ranch not great for jobs but has DART OR for both check out Las Colinas, a singles/couples haven with a DART station and alot of corporate headquarters located there, 1-2 miles south of Valley Ranch on MacArthur Blvd.

Lived there for 11 yrs, Las Colinas is very nice, clean, plenty of nice apartment complexes, reasonable and 15 minutes from downtown Dallas, 7 min. from DFW - truly the center of the Metroplex.

Lakewood has a lot of apartments. Also Deep Ellum if you like lofts. Uptown is another good area. Someone mentioned Highland Park. It's a rich area full of rich white a-holes. Not too many apartments and not near Dart. So forget Highland Park.
In my opinion, especially if you do not have kids, you want to stay south of 635. There are a lot of apartments along Skillman Street but it's a little bit trashy in that area. Inpexpensive though.
Look around the intersection of Mockingbird and Greenville.
That area is really a part of Lakewood that I mentioned earlier.
I think Lakewood is your best bet. If you drive South down Greenville from Mockingbird you will find a lot of apartments, not so much right on Greenville but on the streets intersecting Greenville. Most of these street names start with an 'M' and so the neighborhood, in additon to being part of Lakewood is sometimes called "the M streets". There are a lot of apartments in North Dallas. Far North Dallas. But the area is largely suburban and has no soul. No character. The Cole and Mckinney area (uptown) has a lot of apartments, but kind of pricey. I'm not sure where you're coming from. If it's New York everything will seem cheap. You should not have much trouble finding a good apartment in Dallas.

I agree with Aaron. Collin County is the best place to live, especially Plano. But as long as you settle in Collin county, you'll be good. For someone who's just moving here, I'd suggest Allen. The people are friendly and it's modestly paced. But if you want a good job, come to Plano. We're like Highland Park, but not as near Dallas, which makes us better!

I have been here all my life (almost 50 years) so I am pretty familiar with the different areas. The FAR North Dallas Area, which would be north of Belt Line Rd., and in and around Addison is a pretty nice, affordable place to stay. The DART system is all around you there. There are a lot of restuarants, nightlife, and stores nearby. There are also lots of apartments at McCallum/Coit Rd. near Richardson/Plano. These are very decent and affordable and are right on the DART line also. If you get an efficiency, you can get into a much nicer apt. complex for around $500-550. To get a comfortable 1 BR you will probably need to stay in the $600-700 range. Believe me - I have done extensive research in this area. I would be happy to communicate with you thru email if you'd like and help you find the right area and price range. I know how hard this is -especially if you can't actually be here to see the places for yourself. The looks on-line can be very decieving. I drove thru tons of these places before I made my decision. I am a single female and I really wanted to feel a sense of safety too. Let me know if you need any more help. Good luck!

P.S. I just read where someone suggested the Skillman area. I know for a fact that the government helps newly released criminals get into apts. in that area. The crime rate is really high there. If you pay less than $500 for a 1 BR, you are going to be in a bad neighborhood. Trust me on that!

DART doesn't go to the area considered North Dallas (Lewisville, Denton etc) I would try living in Plano, it is upper middle class,t here are tons of apartments and there is dart rail access.

There are some nice complexes that belong to Lincoln Property Company called "The Village." This is an area near a DART train station where you could go South to downtown or North to the telecom corridor. There are lots of nice apartments up and down the Dallas North Tollway but I am not sure they are covered by DART.

Collin County is great. It had Plano (My aunt bought a place there for $160K.), McKinney, Allen, Frisco, just to name a few. I am going to live in the Dallas area within the next few years if everything goes well and in the right direction.

Las Colinas or Valley Ranch....all the apartments out there are nice. I prefer the "Jefferson at...." properties. It's also near DFW, so catching flights is a cinch.

MacArthur Blvd off 635...this is the area, stretching from Beltline to 183.
