Better to live in San Diego or Santa Barbara?

I'm considering moving back to So Cal later this year, after being on the East coast this year. I used to live in OC and LA and did not like it very much, but always heard great things about San Diego and Santa Barbara. I'm a musician (acoustic rock. myspace.com/johnnydominic) and also a entrepreneur. One of the problems I had with OC and LA were the people-very pretentious and not friendly (and that's coming from a New Englander!)
Anyways, all ideas and advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

The surf is laid back in San Diego and much more affordable, despite being known as "Enron by the Sea."

Santa Barbara is better known as a college town mixed with the wealthy.

Personally, I'd pick San Diego.

Well, I haven't lived in Santa Barbara, but I have lived in San Diego most of my life. Santa Barbara is far more beautiful as well as more expensive to live, however there are probably more opportunities for work as a musician in San Diego. The people here in San Diego are more likely to be less pretentious as well. Again - I can't speak for Santa Barbara - I have only been there a couple of times. My answer is based upon what I know of San Diego.

I live in San Diego and disagree with everyone. It's a nice place to live but Santa Barbara is more culture-friendly. If I were an artist/musician, I'd go to SB, but it is more expensive.

If I had to choose I suppose it would be San Diego. Although SD expensive, Santa Barbara is more expensive. Santa Barbara is beautiful though.

San Diego is more laid back and affordable

Just Me in AZ
I grew up in San Diego and visit often. I would pick SD over Santa Barbara.

San Diego by one thousand miles! San Diego is an urban/suburban dream with jobs, homes, fun and entertainment. Santa Barbara is a vacation destination and it's easy to get bored there. Property costs there are out of control, even in a down market! Move to San Diego. We have such a great indy music scene and no one is pretentious or over bearing. Try the Casbah downtown for indy music and you'll thank me! Good luck! Email me if you want more help.

san diego is more affordable and the people arent as snobby. i lived in san diego and loved it but then later moved to santa barbara but i didnt like it because of the weather and the ppl. just trust me and go with san diego you wont regret it

San Diego is the best city in the world!

I've lived in San Diego a long time and Santa Barbara more briefly. Weather much better in San Diego. Santa Barbara has a lot of fog over the coastal area, even in summer. Much less fog in San Diego.

Other poster mentioned that Santa Barbara has mostly college students and wealthy people, and that's pretty much accurate. San Diego has more "niches" to find one that matches you in temperment and interests and socioeconomic group.

But Santa Barbara is quite beautiful and if you moved there life would certainly be pleasant. However I prefer San Diego. And if sports are important, keep in mind that SD has pro baseball and football and SB has zip.
