it will definitely be hard especially if you plan on living in a major city (which to be honest is probably the best way to experience America when you're first moving here)
I live in midtown in new york city (hell's kitchen off the theatre district like a block from where they do wicked) and I pay 800 dollars a month for a tiny room the size of a bedroom with a shared bathroom (it is like a boarding house). Even for such a small space it is still very low rent, because they are bumping the rent up to 1000 a month for new tenants. A one bedroom apartment in queens which is a 20 minute train from manhattan is like 1200 per month. Also if you need to take a train for work its 76 dollars a month for an unlimited metrocard (better than gas and car bills anyway) We spent about 15 dollars per day on food. Vegetarian food is almost just as expensive (my bf is veg) unless you only live off of vegetables and no tofu or tvp. And if you get a real apartment you have to figure about 200 per month for electric and gas bills.
If you're coming from another country though you can look into a hostel. Alot of them in the city offer monthly accomidations either with dorming (bunk beds) or private apartments. A good site for this is http://www.hostels.com/en/us.ny.ny.html and if you check around you can find a decent one in nyc for fairly cheap. Harlem is kind of scary though if you aren't used to those areas, so stay in either midtown or downtown or below 100th st.
I personally think you will need a little bit more than that, i do it on 1200 a month and save 400 but that's because my bf pays half the rent. Also I probably spend more since we don't have a kitchen and go out to dinner every night, and I smoke cigarettes which is like a 30 dollar a week habit. Maybe other cities are cheaper, but nyc is the most fun and la is even more expensive.
Good luck and I hope you can do it! Our president may suck but America is still pretty rad. After all we do have Disney World. :D (so figure in 100 bucks a month to save up for that too lol) |

you would probably have to bring your own tent and camp for that amount. and maybe even hitchhike (which i don't recommend here). it's possible, but bring a lot of books. |

Good luck! Well at least not in any nice city. Maybe if you went to Iowa and found a house with 40 roomates and lived off Top Raman. |

If you would like to investigate the price for accommodations at the hostels in the US, their link is below. As with any trip, your housing will be one of the greatest expenses. Depending on when you will be traveling, you can camp along the way in many beautiful regions.
Travel will be the other heavy hitter. Since there is no great transportation system that will get you from place to place. The best-known train system in the US is AmTrak. They use both train and bus routes. I've also included a link to their homepage. |

It really depends on what part of the country you are coming to. In the east the cost of living is very high, in the west (not Calif.) it is considerably lower. I live in Arizona and it is almost cheap to live here. Right now gas is $3.15 a gal. my rent is $335 a month. including utilities. States like WA. OR. and Utah are also reasonable places to live. You need to do some homework. |

Can you survive? Yes.
From your question I can't tell if you are really asking whether it is possible to survive on $1000/month with accommodations provided or if you are including the need to pay for accommodations in the $1000. Either way, yes you can survive. You need to find roommates to share costs with.
If you travel by shared car or hitch hike you can see a lot of the country on $1000/month. You will be living in poverty, but you can survive. You cannot expect any "royalties" for such a low amount. You will have to be very creative to get by day-to-day and you will need to have ways to share costs.
You won't be eating out in restaurants, going to Disney World, or staying in hotels, but you can live like a vagabond on that money. |
