Aside from the rest of the great answers here, I gotta jump in because I used to work for the USPS

A lot depends upon how the envelope is addressed. If the recipient's address is printed in block letters or typed in a plain font, then it will go through the automation macines more easily. If the address is in fancy script, or is an incomplete address--such as if you left off the St., Ave., Dr., or apartment number, OR zip code--then it will take longer because a human being is going to have to look at it and try to determine where it should be sent.

If you've overstuffed the envelope it could get caught in the sorting machines and damaged (sometimes shredded). Don't put bulky stuff in paper envelopes.

The biggest blunder I used to see was that senders would put photos or other personal things in an envelope and then write on the front "Do Not Bend" or "Hand Cancel" or "Photos Enclosed." Unfortunately this will not usually get read until a carrier has in in the tray. See, most of the mail goes through those sorting machines first!

The other mistake I used to see was that the sender failed to put their return address on the envelope. I always wondered if it was supposed to be a surprise or a big secret.... however, if the recipient's address is incorrect or unreadable, and there is NO return address - then it's sent to what used to be known as the dead letter office.

So the mileage in unimportant. What is more vital is that the mail piece is addressed properly. As long as your zip code and your cousin's zip code begin with the same first three digits, then it should arrive 2-3 days after it enters the mail stream.

If you are really that concerned I'd suggest that you go into your local Post Office and send it Priority Confirmation. Then you will have a record of sending it and when it was received.

Probably too much information for you, and I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, but you would not believe the number of letters that are undeliverable for the above reasons.

Bonkers!

thats so close if you mail it in the morning it might make it there the same day.

jst4pat
Should get there overnight..

bodinibold
You can send it Express mail or Priority mail, which costs a little more but has a better chance of getting there in time. Express mail is about $5 and Priority mail is about $10 or so. Go to a post office to request this service.

Yes. But heaven help you if you send a letter across the street in downtown Chicago. I once sent a letter to someone across the street and it took eight days to arrive.

yaguru
why not talk to the post office and see if there is 1 or 2 day guaranteed delivery. It might cost more but if it has to be there it has to be there.

Your cousin should get it the day after you mail it.

Guido
