I'll tell you what I avoid and why:
Casino Royale - great place to party, not to stay
Imperial Palace - no real experience, based on poor online trip reports
Tropicana - poor online reviews & their sports book area smelled bad; I mean REAL bad..
Circus Circus - old casino and too many kids
Affordable strip places I would consider:
Hooters - not officially on the strip, it is right next to Tropicana & MGM, cheap and functional rooms and a fun atmosphere.
Excalibur - know it would not be great, but it would be ok.
Luxor - rooms are ok, cafe is good, cool Liquidity center bar area
Monte Carlo - reasonable prices and friendly staff
Flamingo - positive reviews from friends that have stayed there
I'm not a big fan of Harrah's owned properties because of their blackjack rules so Flamingo or maybe Rio are the only Harrah's properties that I would consider.. Rio is off-strip.. |

Both are fine. IP is a bit darker in the casino. IP has a better location on the strip but the Trop is not bad either. You can't go wrong with either since you really won't be in your rooms that much except to sleep. One thing about Tropicana is that most free shuttles stop there and much easier to get around. |

Excalibur has very good prices. Before you go check the current hotel promotion codes on http://www.vegas-hotels-online.com in order to save money. |

Try Luxor, Excalibur, Circus Circus or even Monte Carlo. They have great rates but you have to book online using their discount promo codes. |

Imperial Palace is right in the middle of things, and I have found it to be quite inexpesive on several 'sabaticals'. |

I have a friend that LOVES Bill's Gamblin Hall... which used to be the Barbary coast (across from Ballys). He says rooms are usually pretty cheap and the location is great! |

The good news is that Vegas hotels are hurting right now and are offering a lot of discounts. I know you want to be on the strip but the station casinos aren't bad and I just received an offer for 39.00 a night and 4th night free. Hooters casino is down at the end of the strip and has good deals frequently also. Excalibur is very "family friendly" so there are a fair number of kids around the pool and such but they usually have good deals if you do a little research. The best deals though are if you frequent any other casinos in other cities that have properties in Vegas. Any comp points or other perks can usually be used at there sister properties. For example, I visit Harrahs in St. Louis and have stayed free at Rio, Bally's, Paris, and Harrahs in Vegas because of my play in St. Louis.
You might also want to checkout the link below for all kinds of cheap deals in vegas. |

AVOID imperial palace at any price. I would also avoid circus circus and excalibur.
As someone else said, even the really nice hotels are offering low rates right now. I would check into Ballys, Flamingo, Harrahs, maybe luxor but I didnt like that too much either. Also, the Rivera is a very old school hotel, but they have some great deals. |

Try the Excalibur. However, just so you know, the hotels on the strip are always overpriced and the rooms are never really that great. The hotels spend all of their money on the lobbys and the casinos. If you're looking for cheap deals, a decent room and close to entertainment then try the Golden Nugget. |

Gotta say...Tropicana is a good decesion and pretty cheap. Guess it depends on your budget, really. MGM is available, awesome hotel, for about 50-60 bucks more a night and they have a great poker room. I booked thru www.affordablehotel.net and paid $38 a night for Tropicana. |

Hmmm, I would recommend getting a nice hotel and having everyone stay in it... But if you want something affordable, I would recommend checking out BookMe dot com. You can compare ALL the reputable travel sites, and save money. Good luck! |
