Of course we don't hate them. Hate is a very strong word. Of course for those of us who need to be in midtown for one reason or another, tourists can be a nuisance. There is certain behavior that tourists tend to exhibit which can cause an annoyance in the daily life of a New Yorker. Things such as stopping short on the sidewalk, not moving all the way in on when boarding the subway, etc. But no, I don't believe most of us hate them.
Tourists should not be intimidated to ask New Yorkers for directions on the street or the train. I know that myself and most of my friends have no problem helping others and even get a degree of satisfaction from it.
I will say that many New Yorkers have more disdain for Americans that come from the midwest for example, than for those from other countries. |

The problem with tourists in NYC is that they think they are in Disney World.
NYC is not Disney World. People work in NYC in other jobs that have nothing to do with tourism.
It really sucks when you are 10 min late for a meeting and there are three yokels from Springfield, Mo. standing in the middle of 42nd and 7th Ave with their map wide open taking up 3/4 of the sidewalk looking for Times Square all the while staring at the neon on the Reuters Building. |

no we don't hate tourists we just look at them and laugh because they can't stop lokoing up while they walk. that can get annoying as well, people stopping right in front of you while your trying to get someplace. just remember while walking there IS someone behind you, walk to the side dont just stop in the middle of the sidewalk......people are trying to walk there |

My friend, this is New York City, the Capital of the World. Why do you think millions of tourist love coming here? Because this city is the most famous city in the world.
Paris may have the Eiffel Tower, London may have Big Ben and the Tower Bridge, Sidney may have The Opera House and Sidney Harbour Bridge, but New York City have the Empire State Building, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, among others. So do New Yorkers hate tourist, the answer is no. New Yorkers love tourist.
Good luck |

I think that New Yorkers have a love/hate relationship with tourists.
We are proud of our City, and it's nice that so many people appreciate it. And of course, the money brought in by tourism isn't exactly small change!
But it gets wearing to constantly be tripping over tourists, some of whom act like the City is one big tourist site, when we have to actually get places and do stuff.
And, of course, it's annoying to go to a museum or someother cultural activity and find it crowded with tourists! It would be nicer to have some of these places to ourselves, some of the time.
But, on the whole, most people appreciate the tourists. It's nice to see the City through new eyes sometimes! |

I don't think so. Major economy comes to New York from tourists. So they actually would like tourists! |

Only the ones that stand in the middle of the streets like idiots. & the ones that take pictures of like a cardboard box. & the ones that rush through people with there huge cameras crashing into pedestrians. & the ones that take pictures in the middle of the sidewalk like people aren't in rushes. & the ones that take their sweet time strolling down a busy street & then get mad when they get pushed out of the way. i guess that pretty much rounds up all of them so yeah. (=
well at least all the ones i've seen. other than the things i speicified then no, i guess. |

we have a love-hate relationship with yous
we love your money, and you contribute to our economy, but you walk too damn slow, you stare up a skyscrapers all the time, take pics of everything, make unwanted eye contact, and you tend to get lost easily even though the layout in manhattan is an exact grid.
generally, we're kind to you as long as you're not obnoxious, irritating, and just above all dumb. if you act like you got common sence, we love you, because that way you know to kindly stay outta our way and let us get on with our lives as NYers. if you get lost, ask for help like you were taught in elementary school, we are helpful. personally, i would rather have a tourist who knows where he's goin than a tourist who is lost and in my way.
AND LOSE THE BACKPACKS. THIS AINT THE WOODS, NO NEED TO CARRY A FREAKIN TENT ON YA BACK. |

Most New Yorkers that I know are a bit annoyed at tourists, although obviously not all of them hate tourists or they wouldn't be answering their questions on this message board. |

I enjoy the tourists soooooo much.
These people are spending their hard earned money to visit the place where I grew up and love.
When a group of five stop in the middle of a busy street looking at a map stop and block other pedestrians from getting to their destinations. I smile and ask them "where do you want to go?"
NYC is the top destination of visitors, here in the USA. Damn I love it!!! |

I am Japanese and consider tourist when I first move to NYC.
But I am citizen now.
Not all New Yorkers hate tourist.
Most New Yorkers who don't welcome tourists are in Long Island.
Big Apple is tourist friendly, except for Harlem areas.
I became famous because I made lots of friend with Fire Dept, Police Dept, museums, and even bus drivers and subway conductors. |

I hate them but at the same time you boost the local economy. So long as you stay in the touristy areas and don't venture into the neighborhoods. |
