Do any white people live in new orleans?

I am certain I will be attacked for this answer, but it is just the facts.

City government, Spike Lee's "documentary", and the news media almost always focus ONLY on majority-Black neighborhoods flooded by Katrina, so it would be easy for someone elsewhere to assume only African-Americans live in New Orleans.

The City of New Orleans is not an “historically African American city". NOLA was majority White until about 30 years ago, and the census of 1980 listed the 580,000 population as 51% Black/49% White.

A combination of factors caused the Black majority to increase during the 1980s to 1990s, mostly by a reduction in the non-Black population. The population of the City New Orleans had fallen to about 475,000 by 2005 (when Katrina struck), at about 65% Black/35% White.

Realize the City is only part of the greater New Orleans area, which had a population of about 1.4 million when Katrina struck. The greater New Orleans metro area and the State of Louisiana (4.5 million) were and are majority-White, with a ratio of about 70%/30%. Most of the Whites, Hispanics, Asians, etc. who left the City of New Orleans in the 1980s & 1990s simply moved a few miles away to a suburb.

The storm apparently permanently displaced almost 200,000 people from the City, and most of them appear to be African-American. Some will move back but many have made lives elsewhere over the past 2 1/2 years.

City government frequently offers self-serving estimates of the current population, and advocacy groups claim New Orleans is still majority African-American. In reality, NO ONE knows how many people currently live in New Orleans or what the ratios are.

However, the November elections included several contests where the voting was clearly determined by race, and the White candidates won with about 53% of the vote. The elections of 2010 (which include a Mayoral contest) will show if the trend continues.

LOL, yah there is definately some white chocolate in our city.

Yes, there are white people in New Orleans. There are black people in New Orleans too. And Hispanic people and Asian people... there are all kinds of people in the city (and surrounding areas.) Don't let yourself get swayed into any sort of negative stereotypes by what you see on TV

Ali
yes, white people do live in new orleans.

Nah, after white slavery ended, they all went north to pursue careers in the circus!

many of us are called Cajun. We also have a HUGE Italian, German and Irish population .. in which the generations are just as old as the Cajuns

Yes of course. The city has always had a high African American population but there is is a good percentage of whites as well as other races. Before the storm the city was about 71% African American. Now I would say its about 55% African American. About 45% Caucasian and a increase of Latinos up to about 3%, 2% other (with a strong Vietnemese population represented).

The reason for this is many of the areas that were most devistated by the flood waters were the poorer communities, many of which were mainly African American communities. Many of the residents of those areas relocated and have not returned. The city is still down about 180,000 in population prior to the storm.

Wow! What a idiotic question to ask. Though I understand the thoughts behind it. Yes it is a highly black concentrated area but it was founded by the spanish then the french took it I believe. The point being its a melting pot! Being from Denver I often have people ask me if there are african americans there. There too a very idiotic question. Denver happens to be known for one of the best racially intigrated cities in the U.S. and one of the most equaly dispersed cities as far as diversity. In fact our Five Points Neighborhood is known as the Harlem of the west with many jazz cafes and history of the contributions made by our african american brothers and sisters. No we dont have the black population of NO ours is more about 25-30% black and visa versa with NO.
Please dont ask these questions.

Just the ones who are too poor to leave. I lived there 6 months in 2006-07 and I met very few wealthy white people who were still living in New Orleans.
