I am an American and I have been to Europe,Germany to be specific. It is like England in that it is very heavily populated. To expect you to know a particular person is silly, esp in the city of London. My father lived in Chicago and I did not expect him to know all of the 3 million people that live in the city.
It is silly to do that, but it is an individual ignorance--not a general one.
BTW:a nation of 30 million people is not small and London is one of the biggest and most important cities in the World. Some of these comments are just stupid. |

most Americans have no idea about the rest of the world as they are a very insular nation |

Most Americans I've found aren't interested in anything besides London, which would make it relatively small. |

Dude I know to you 60 million is big, but if you compare the UK to the US, well, lets just say the UK is MINI!! |

Honestly, I've had fellow americans ask me if I know so-and-so because I'm from the same state. I think people like to find connections. |

haha, that is awful!
and the sad truth is that a lot of people know nothing outside their sheltered boxes. the usa is so BIG and everything else is second rate to them.
i personally think that is awful! |

Yeah they really do think everywhere aprt from the States is tiny. Its the very same in Ireland, I was asked if I knew somebody called Sean from Derry! I think its hilarious that they think the whole Irish nation know each other! There's a few million people on this little island! |

85% of Americans have never had a passport and have no interest in what is outside their own country. Many Americans think that the UK and London are the same place.
I worked with one American who despite having a PhD, couldn't understand that we don't use US Dollars in Europe!! |

imagine how many people we would have if Rajeet and his cousins all moved back to Pakistan though, there would be hardly any of us! |

America is a big place and the rest of the world seems very far away from us. Most Americans never have the opportunity to travel to Europe or the UK. We mostly travel within our own country or the Caribbean. It is not that we are trying to be insulting to the UK; it is just most of us have never been there so we picture it being a small, intimate island where people drink tea and watch cricket together. I know this probably seems ridiculous to you but I am sure you have false impressions about places you have never been to either.
BTW - We love the British accent : ) |

As an American, I can say there are a few ignorant people here when it comes to geography. But to be fair, you are small compared to the US. I don't think we travel through Europe as much as you do. From coast to coast it is a 6 hour flight. If you fly 6 hours you have crossed quite a few countries. And it is much more expensive for us because of this. So we don't go on vacations like you do. Be patient with us, we do not mean any harm. |

America today is comparable to the Britain of ancient times in terms of isolation. We've basically got an entire continent to our own over here and visiting other countries means crossing the entirety of an ocean. A well-traveled American has visited many states. A well-traveled European has visited many countries. Geographically, it's about the same. |

I used to be a telephone engineer in London (population 8 million) People would say ' my cousin works for the GPO (defunct 30 years ago) do you know him ?
I always used to say ' was he a little gay guy with a bald head and an orange beard?'
The answer was always 'no?'
Same principle applies. No fucki*g clue !!!!!! |

Since the size of Uk can easily fit into a US state it is likely that some American will think UK is very small.
You are to be commended for your politeness.
Many Americans do tour the world.
I agree we have a wonderful planet. |

Now behave just because we have so many countries on are doorstep makes it easier for us to travel and of course we do like to get to the warmer climates especially in the Winter. |

I think that we probably think of it as physically small. It would fit nicely into my own home state of Texas, after all. However, most of us know that London is a huge city, whether or not we've been fortunate enough to travel there; just chalk it up to that inevitable number in any group who don't have a clue ;-) |

Thre think we're a cute little country where we all eat scones and drink tea with our pinkies sticking out. well thats the opinion i get from most americans. we are tiny as well compared to the size of most of there states let alone the whole country. |

Many people from the USA like to travel, and I know I would never say anything like that to someone, I mean the world isn't that small of a place. I no, I know the UK isn't just some tiny island. I'd like to go there someday. |

The UK is small compared to the US. And I am sure that not all UK people tour the world, and I am sure that some US people do tour the world. They are probably just trying to make some connection to you by asking that, to try and get a conversation started. |

Yes. This is one reason they love to come here. They think we are "dinky". I have this on good report from several Americans (not entirely stupid) They think this is an endearing trait and they think we are "cute" |
