Do you have to have a ticket to attend the inauguration in DC?

Or is it open to the public?

To be up close and able to see Barack Obama take the oath of office, you need a ticket, and all tickets have already been distributed. Those not holding a ticket are welcome to gather on the National Mall, which is out of range for direct viewing, and where large screen monitors will show the swearing in ceremony.

For the motorcade to the White House, tickets are needed in order to sit along the parade route in bleacher seats. No tickets are needed in order to stand along the parade route, although you'll need to get there early in order to grab a space before they are all gone.

You need a ticket and at this point they have been given out by congressmen to constituents. There are contests out there to get some (good luck with that).

But being that this will be one of the most historic events in recent times in DC, they will be having screens along "The Mall" so that people can view it. It will be pretty tight out there because of the number of people that will be coming in. So, if you are planning on going, plan your route ahead of time or stay in and watch it at one of the many inauguration parties going on.

Some parts of the inauguration will require tickets - but not all of them. The main area of the mall will be fully open to the public (no tickets required), AND parts of the parade route also do not require tickets. For all the info you need related to the festivities, go to:
